Chapter 1
This is
the book of the genealogy of Yeshua Mashiach* ben David ben Avraham. 2
Avraham fathered Yitzchak. Yitzchak fathered Ya’aqub. Ya’aqub fathered
Yudah and his brothers. 3 Yudah fathered Perez and Zerach by Tamar.
Perez fathered Chezron. Chezron fathered Ram. 4 Ram fathered Amminadab.
Amminadab fathered Nachshon. Nachshon fathered Salmon. 5 Salmon fathered
Bo’az by Rahab. Bo’az fathered Oved by Rut. Oved fathered Ishai. 6 Ishai
fathered David the king. David fathered Shlomo by the wife of Uri’ya. 7
Shlomo fathered Rehoboam. Rehoboam fathered Avi’ya. Avi’ya fathered Asa.
8 Asa fathered Yehoshaphat. Yehoshaphat fathered Yoram. Yoram fathered
Uzi’yahu.
9 Uzi’yahu fathered Yotam. Yotam fathered Achaz. Achaz
fathered Chezeki’ya. 10 Chezeki’ya fathered Menasha. Manasha fathered
Amon. Amon fathered Yoshi’ya. 11 Yoshi’ya fathered Yechani’ya and his
brothers, during the captivity of Babylon*.
12 After the captivity to Babylon, Yechani’ya fathered
Shealtiel. Shealtiel fathered Zerubavel. 13 Zerubavel fathered Avichud.
Avichud fathered Eliakim. Eliakim fathered Azor. 14 Azor fathered Zadok.
Zadok fathered Achim. Achim fathered Eliud. 15 Eliud fathered Eleazar.
Eleazar fathered Mattan. Mattan fathered Ya’aqub.
16 Ya’aqub fathered Yoseph, the relative of Miriam, from whom was born
Yeshua*, who is called the Anointed. 17 Therefore all the generations
from Avraham to David were fourteen generations; and from David to the
captivity of Babylon were fourteen generations; and from the captivity
to Babylon to the Mashiach were fourteen generations.
18 Now the birth of Yeshua the Messiah was like this;
while his mother, Miriam, was engaged to Yoseph, before they came
together, she was found to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit*.
19 Yoseph, her lord, being just, and not desiring to expose her,
secretly thought about dismissing her. 20 While he was thinking on these
things, an angel of YHWH* appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Yoseph,
son of David, do not have fear to take Miriam as your wife, for he that
is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She shall bear a son and
she shall call his name Yeshua, for he shall save his people from their
sins.”
22 Now all this has happened, that it might be fulfilled
which was spoken by YHWH through the prophet, saying, 23 “Behold, a
virgin will conceive, and give birth to a son. And they will call his
name Immanuel.”* 24 Yoseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel
of YHWH commanded him, and took his wife; 25 and did not know her [in a
conjugal manner] until she had given birth to her firstborn son. And she
called his name Yeshua.
Chapter 2
Now when Yeshua was born in Beitlechem of Yudah in the
days of King Herodus, wise men* came from the east to Yerushalayim, and
they said, 2 “Where is he, the King of the Judeans, who has been born?
For we saw his star in the east, and we have come to worship him.” 3 And
King Herodus heard this and was troubled, as well as all Yerushalayim
with him. 4 And he gathered all of the chief priests and scribes of the
people, he asked them where the Messiah would be born. 5 They answered,
“In Beitlechem of Yudah, for it is written like this by the prophet, 6
‘You Beitlechem of Yudah, you will not be the least of Yudah: therefore
from you a king will go out, who will shepherd the kings among my
people, Yisrael.’” *
7 Then Herodus secretly called the wise men, and learned
from them exactly what time the star appeared. 8 He sent them to
Beitlechem, and said, “Go and search carefully for the boy and when you
have found him inform me so that I too can go and worship him.”
9 And when they heard from the king they departed; and
behold, the star, which they saw in the east, was going before them,
until it came and stood over where the boy was. 10 When they saw the
star, they rejoiced with very much joy. 11 And they entered the house
and saw the boy with Miriam, his mother, and they fell down and
worshiped him. And they opened their treasures and offered to him gifts:
gold, myrrh and incense. 12 It was shown to them in a dream that they
should not return to Herodus, so they went back to their own country by
another way.
13 When they left, an angel of YHWH appeared to Yoseph in
a dream, and said to him, “Arise. Take the boy and his mother and flee
to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herodus is going to
seek the boy so as to destroy him.”
14 Yoseph arose and took the boy and his mother during
the night, and fled to Egypt, 15 and remained there until the death of
Herodus; that it might be fulfilled that which was spoken by YHWH by the
prophet, saying, “From Egypt I have called my son,” * for He shall be
called a Nesar*.
16 Then Herodus, when he saw that he was mocked by the
wise men, was very angry, and sent out, and killed all the boys of
Beitlechem and from its borders, two years and under, according to the
time he had inquired from the wise men.
17Then it was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah
the prophet, who said, 18 “A voice was heard in Ramah, great crying and
wailing, Rachel weeping for her sons; she did not desire to be
comforted, because they are no more.”*
19 When King Herodus died, the angel of YHWH appeared in
a dream to Yoseph in Egypt, and said to him, 20 “Arise and take the boy
and his mother, and go to Eretz-Yisrael, for they who were seeking the
life of the boy have died.” 21 Yoseph arose and took the boy and his
mother and came to Eretz-Yisrael. 22 When he heard that Archelaus was
king in Yudah in place of his father, Herodus, he was afraid to go
there. And it was revealed to him in a dream, that he should go to the
land of Galil, 23 and came and dwelled in the city of the Nesarim; that
it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “He will be
called a Nasarean.”
Chapter 3
In those days, Yochanan the baptiser came, preaching in
the desert of Yudah, saying, 2 “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is
near!” 3 For it is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
“The
voice of one crying in the wilderness,
prepare the Way of YHWH.
Make straight his path.” *
4 Now Yochanan’s clothes were made of the hair of camels,
and a girdle of skins was upon his loins. His food was locusts and wild
honey. 5 Then [people] from Yerushalayim, all of Yudah, and all the
lands that surround the Yordan had gone out to him 6 that they could be
baptised by him in the Yordan River, after they confessed their sins. 7
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees that came to be
baptised he said to them, “Generation of vipers, who has told you to
flee from the wrath that will come? 8 Practice therefore the fruits that
are worthy of repentance! 9 You should not suppose and think within
yourselves, ‘We have Avraham as our father,’ for I tell you that from
these stones Elohim is able to raise up sons to Avraham.
10 “Behold! The axe is placed at the root of the trees.
All trees therefore that do not bring forth good fruit will be cut and
thrown into the fire. 11 I baptise you in water for repentance, but he
that will come after me is more powerful than I, [and] I am not worthy
to remove his sandals. He will baptise you by the Holy Spirit and by
fire. * 12 He whose winnowing fan is in his hand will cleanse his
threshing floors. He will gather his wheat into his granaries, and the
chaff he will burn in the fire that will not extinguish.”
13 Then Yeshua and his mother and his brothers came from
Galil to the Yordan to Yochanan, to be baptised by him. 14 But Yochanan
refusing him, said, “It is I that needs to be baptised by you, and you
come to me?”
15 Then Yeshua answered and said to him, “It is not that
I have sinned that I should be baptised, but you must allow it now, for
it is proper for us to fulfil all righteousness.” Then he allowed it. 16
When Yeshua was baptised, straightway he came up from the water, and the
heavens were opened to him. And he saw the Spirit of Elohim descending
like a dove, and the Holy Spirit descended and rested upon him. 17 And
behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am
pleased. My Son, the prophets have declared you; you have come and I
will reside within you. You are my rest and you are my one son who will
reign forever.”
Chapter 4
Then Yeshua was taken by the Holy Spirit into the desert
to be tempted by the accuser. 2 And he fasted for forty days and forty
nights, after which he began to hunger. 3 The tempter approached him and
said to him” “If you are the Son of Elohim, say to these stones ‘become
bread’.”
4 And he answered: “It is written in the Scriptures, ‘Not
by bread alone does the son of man live, but by all the words that
proceed from the mouth of Elohim.’” * 5 Then the accuser took him into
Jerusalem and raised him upon the edge of Beit ha'Mikdash, 6 and said to
him, “If you the Son of Elohim, cast yourself down, for it is written:
‘He will put his angels in command of you.’ and, ‘Upon their hands they
will bear you up, that your foot should not strike a stone.’” *
7 Yeshua said to him, “Again, it is written, ‘You shall
not test YHWH your Elohim.’” * 8 Likewise my mother, the Holy Spirit,
took me by one of my hairs and carried me to the great Har Tabor. 9 And
the accuser said to him: “I will give you all of these [things] if you
will fall and worship me.”
10 Then Yeshua said to him: “Leave enemy! * For it is
written that ‘you shall worship YHWH your Elohim, and him alone shall
you serve.’“ * 11 Then the accuser left him, and behold, angels
approached and were ministering to him.
12 Now when Yeshua heard that Yochanan was arrested, he
departed to Galil. 13 And he left the place of the Nesarim and he came
and dwelled in K'far Nachum, on the side of the sea by the border of
Zevulun and Naphtali, 14 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken
through Isaiah the prophet who said, 15 “The land of Zevulun, the land
of Naphtali, by the way of the sea, beyond the Yordan, Galil of the
nations, 16 the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, and
those who sit in the land and the shadow of death, for them a light has
appeared.” *
17 From that time, Yeshua began to preach and to say,
“Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is near.” 18 And when he was walking
by on the side of the Sea of Galil, he * saw two brothers: Shimon, who
was called Keipha, and Andreos, his brother, who were casting nets into
the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 Yeshua said to them, “Come after
me, and I will make you so that you become fishers of the sons of men.”
20 And at once they left their nets and they went after
him. 21 And when he crossed from there, he saw two other brothers, Jacob
the son of Zavddai, and Yochanan his brother, in a boat with their
father Zavddai, who were mending their nets. Yeshua called them. 22 And
at once they left the ship and their father, and they went after him.
23 And Yeshua would preach in all Galil, and would teach
in their assemblies; and he preached the hope of the Kingdom, and he
healed every disease and sickness among the people. 24 And his fame was
heard in all Syria. And they approached him who were sick with various
illnesses and those who were oppressed with pain, and possessed, and
mentally ill, and paralytics; and he healed them. 25 A great crowd from
Galil went after him, and from Decapolis, Yerushalayim, Yudah and from
across the Yordan.
Chapter 5
When Yeshua saw the crowd, he went up the mountain, and
when he sat down his talmidim* drew near to him. 2 He opened his mouth
and was teaching them, and said:
3 “Blessed are they who are poor in spirit, because
theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. *
4 Blessed are they who are mourning, because they will be
comforted. *
5 Blessed are they who are meek, because they will
inherit the earth. *
6 Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for
righteousness, because they will be satisfied.
7 Blessed are they who are merciful, because upon them
will [there] be mercies.
8 Blessed are they who are pure in their hearts, because
they will see Elohim.
9 Blessed are they who make peace, because they will be
called the sons of Elohim.
10 Blessed are they who have been persecuted for
righteousness, because theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
11 “Blessed are you whenever they curse you, and
[whenever] they persecute you, and they say every kind of evil word
about you falsely, because of me.
12 Then rejoice, and be glad, for your reward is great in
heaven. For likewise they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if that salt
should become tasteless, with what would it be seasoned? Then it is not
fit for anything, but to be thrown outside and trodden by man. 14 You
are the light of the world. It is not possible to hide a city that is
built on a mountain. 15 Do not light a lamp, and put it under a bushel
basket, but on a lampstand; and it shines on all that are in the house.
Likewise, let your light shine in front of the sons of men; 16 that they
should see your good works, and they glorify your Father who is in
heaven.
17 “Do not think that I came to dismiss the Torah or the
Prophets. I have not come to dismiss, but to carry out. 18 For truly, I
say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one smallest letter *
or one stroke * shall pass away from the Torah, until everything
happens. 19 Therefore, anyone who dismisses one of these small
commandments, and thus teach the sons of men to do so, will be called
little in the Kingdom of Heaven; but those who do and teach them shall
be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. 20 For I say to you that
unless your righteousness exceeds more than that of the scribes and
Pharisees, you will not enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.
21 “You have heard that it was said to those in the past,
‘You shall not murder;’* and ‘Whoever shall murder shall be condemned to
judgment.’ 22 But I say to you, that anyone who provokes his brother to
anger without a cause * is condemned to judgment; and anyone who should
say to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing *!’ is condemned to the
assembly; and anyone who should say, ‘You are a coward!’ is condemned to
the fire of Gehinnom. *
23 “If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar,
and remember that your brother holds a grudge against you, 24 leave your
offering there upon the altar, and first go to be reconciled with your
brother, and then come offer your offering; for it is a great sin to
cause distress to the spirit of your brother. 25 Be in agreement with
your adversary at law quickly, while you are with him in the way; lest
your adversary at law deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver
you to the officer, and you be thrown into the house of captives. 26
Truly I say to you, that you will not come out from there, until you pay
the last penny. * 27 “You have heard that it has been said, * ‘You shall
not commit adultery;’ * 28 but I say to you that all who looks at a
woman as lusting has immediately committed adultery in his heart. 29 If
your right eye stumbles, pluck it out and cast it away from you. For it
is better for you that one of your members should perish, than for your
entire body to be cast into Gehinnom. * 30 If your right hand stumbles
you, cut it off, and cast it away from you. For it is better for you
that one of your members should perish, than for your entire body to be
cast into Gehinnom. *
31 “It has been said that, ‘He who puts away his wife,
shall give a certificate of divorce to her,’ * 32 but I say to you that
anyone who puts away his wife, except for the case of fornication,
causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman
commits adultery.
33 “Again you have heard that it has been said to those
before you that ‘You shall not lie in your oath, but complete your oath
to YHWH,’ 34 but I say to you, you should not say ‘I swear’: not by
heaven, because it is the throne of Elohim; 35 and not by the earth,
because it is the footstool that is beneath his feet; and not by
Yerushalayim, because it is the city of the great King, 36 and you
should not swear by your head, because you are not able to make one hair
white or black. 37 But your word ‘Yes’ should be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’
should be ‘No.’ Anything that is more than this is of evil.
38 “You have heard that it has been said, ‘An eye for an
eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ * 39 But I say to you, that you should
not stand against evil; but he who strikes you against your right cheek,
turn to him the other also. 40 And anyone who desires to go to court to
take your coat, leave him your cloak also. 41 He that compels you to go
one mile, go with him two. 42 He that asks you to give to him, you
should not deny him who desires to borrow from you.
43 “You have heard that it has been said that ‘You shall
love your neighbour, * and hate your enemy. * ’ 44 But I say to you,
love your enemies, bless those that curse you, and do that which is
pleasing to those who hate you and pray for those that take you by force
and persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in
heaven – He that raises His sun upon the good and upon the evil, and
causes His rain to descend upon the just and upon the unjust. 46 For if
you love only those that love you, what reward do you have? Do not even
the publicans do this? 47 If you only greet your brothers in peace, what
more are you doing? Do not even the publicans do this? 48 Therefore you
should become perfect, as your Father who is in heaven is perfect.
Chapter 6
Take heed in your alms giving so as not to perform it
before the sons of men, so that you may be seen of them; for otherwise,
you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 Therefore, when
you do your alms giving you should not sound a shofar * before you, like
the hypocrites do in the assemblies and in the market places, so that
the B’nai Adam may praise them. Truly I say to you, that they have
received their reward. 3 But you, when doing alms giving, you should not
expose your left hand as to what your right hand is doing; 4 so that
your alms giving may be in secret and your Father, who sees in secret,
will reward you openly.
5 “And whenever you pray, you should not be like the
hypocrites, that love to stand in the assemblies and on the corners of
the marketplaces to pray, that they may be seen by the sons of men.
Truly, I say to you, that they have received their reward. 6 But you,
when you pray, enter into your private room, and close your door and
pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret
will reward you openly. 7 And when you pray, you should not be overly
talkative, like the pagans; for they hope that by [the use of] a lot of
words they will be heard. 8 Therefore do not be imitating them, for your
Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 Therefore, you should pray like this:
‘Our
Father in heaven, may your name be sanctified. 10 Your Kingdom come.
Your will be done, as in heaven, so on earth. 11 Give us our needs today
and for each day. 12 Forgive us our offences, as we have forgiven those
who have offended us. 13 And do not permit us to be brought into trial,
but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the Kingdom, the power,
and the glory forever and ever. Amen.*’
14 “For if you forgive men their wrongdoing, your Father
who is in heaven will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men
their wrongdoing, neither will your Father forgive your wrongdoing.
16 “Furthermore when you fast, you should not be sad like
the hypocrites, for they disfigure their appearance, so that they may be
seen by men to be fasting. Truly I say to you, that they have received
their reward. 17 But you, whenever you fast, wash your face and anoint
your head; 18 so that you should not be seen by men to be fasting, but
by your Father who is in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret,
will reward you.
19 “You should not store for yourselves treasure on the
earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and they
steal; 20 but store for yourselves treasure in heaven, where neither
moth nor rust destroy, and where thieves can not break in and steal; 21
for where your treasure is, there also is your heart.
22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your
eye is pure, your entire body is full of light. 23 But if your eye is
evil, your entire body is darkness. If therefore the light that is in
you is dark, how immense is your darkness! 24 “No man is able to serve
two masters, for he will either hate one and he will love the other; or
he will honour one and he will treat the other with disrepute. You are
not able to serve both Elohim and money. 25 I say this because you
should not become anxious about your life: what you will eat and what
you will drink; and not about your body, what you will wear. Is not your
soul more important than food, and the body than clothing? 26 Behold the
birds in the sky, that they do not sow, and they do not reap, and they
do not gather into storehouses. And your Father who is in heaven feeds
them. Are you not more important than they?
27 “Who among you, while anxious, is able to add one
thing to his importance*? 28And why are you anxious about clothing?
Consider the lilies of the wild, how they grow without hard work and
spinning, 29 but I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory was
clothed like one of these. 30 But if Elohim clothes the grass of the
field, which today exists, and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will
he not much more clothe you, you of little faith?
31 “Therefore do not be anxious, or say, ‘What will we
eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘What will we wear?’ 32 For all these
things the peoples of the earth require and your Father who is in heaven
also knows that you require all of these things. 33 But seek first the
Kingdom of Elohim, and his righteousness; and all these things will be
added to you. 34 Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for
tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for each day is its
evil.”
Chapter 7
1 Do not judge, in order that you should not be judged. 2
For with the judgment that you judge with, you shall be judged; and by
the measure that you measure, shall it be measured to you. 3 And why do
you observe the straw in the eye of your brother, and do not regard the
beam that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother,
Allow me to pluck the straw from your eye; and behold! a beam is in your
own eye. 5 You hypocrite; pluck first the beam from your own eye; and
then you will see clearly, to pluck the straw out of the eye of your
brother. If you are in my bosom and you do not do the will of my Father
who is in heaven, I will cast you away from my bosom.
6 You should not hang consecrated ornaments on dogs and
you should not cast your pearls before swine in case they tread them
under their feet and turn and cut you. 7 Ask, and it shall be given to
you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you.
For he who seeks should not quit seeking until he finds, and when he
finds he will be amazed, and having been amazed he will be strengthened,
and having been strengthened he will find rest. 8 For, every one that
asks, receives and he that seeks, finds and to him that knocks, it shall
be opened. 9 For what man is there among you, of whom if his son asks
for bread, will he give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks of him a fish,
will he give him a serpent?
11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts
to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give
good things to them that ask him? 12 All that which you desire men do to
you, so also you should do to them: for this is the Torah and the
Prophets.
13 Enter in by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and
broad the way that leads to destruction; and many are they that walk in
it. 14 How small is the gate and straitened is the way that leads to
life, and it is few who find it! 15 Beware of false prophets who come to
you in the clothing of sheep, but on the inside they are ravenous
wolves.
16 And by their fruits you shall know them. Do men gather
grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? 17 So every good tree
bears good fruits; but a bad tree bears bad fruits. 18 A good tree
cannot bear bad fruits; nor can a bad tree bear good fruits. 19 Every
tree that does not bear good fruits is cut down and consigned to the
fire. 20 Therefore, by their fruits you shall know them.
21 It is not everyone who says to me, Mari, Mari*, will
enter into the kingdom of heaven: but only he that does the will of my
Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Mari, Mari,
have we not prophesied in your name, and in your name cast out demons,
and in your name performed many miracles? 23 And then I will declare to
them: I have not known you; depart from me, you workers of wickedness.
24 Every one therefore that hears these my words, and
puts them into practice, will be like a wise man, one that built his
house upon a rock. 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and
the winds blew; and they rushed upon that house; and it did not fall,
for its foundations were laid upon a rock. 26 And every one that hears
these my words, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man that
built his house upon sand. 27 And the rain descended, and the floods
came, and the winds blew; and they rushed upon that house, and it fell;
and its ruin was immense.
28 And so it was, that when Yeshua had concluded these
words, the crowds were astonished at his teaching: 29 for he would teach
them as one having authority; and not as their Scribes and Pharisees.
Chapter 8
1 As he descended from the mountain very large crowds of
people gathered around him. 2 And behold, a certain leper came and
worshipped him, and said: Mari, if you desire, you can make me clean. 3
And Yeshua stretched forth his hand, touched him, and said: I do so
desire. Be clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. 4 And Yeshua
said to him, See, that you tell no man: but go, show yourself to the
priests, and present an offering as Mosha has commanded, for their
testimony.
5 Now when Yeshua had entered into K’far Nachum, a
certain centurion came to him, and begged him, 6 and said: Lord, my boy
lies at home and is paralytic, and badly afflicted. 7 Yeshua said to
him, I will come and heal him. 8 The centurion replied, and said: My
Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof: but simply
speak the word and my boy will be healed. 9 For I also am a man under
authority, and there are soldiers under my hands, and I say to this one,
Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant,
Do this thing, and he does it.
10 And when Yeshua heard this, he was moved by it; and he
said to those walking with him, Truly I say to you, not even in Yisrael
have I found faith like this. 11 And I say to you, that many shall come
from the east, and from the west, and shall recline with Avraham and
Yitzchak and Ya’aqub, in the kingdom of heaven; 12 but the children of
the kingdom shall be cast into outer darkness. There will be weeping and
gnashing of teeth.
13 And Yeshua said to the centurion. Go; it will be to
you as you have believed. And his boy was cured in that moment.
14 And Yeshua came to the house of Shimon and saw the
mother of his wife lying down, confined by a fever. 15 And he touched
her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose and was serving him.
16 And when it was evening, they brought many who were
possessed before him; and he cast out their demons by a word, and all of
those who were diseased were healed 17 so that it might be fulfilled
that which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, who said: He will bear our
sorrows, and our sicknesses he will bear.
18 When Yeshua saw the many crowds around him, he
instructed that they should go to the other side. 19 And a scribe came
and said to him: Rabbi, I will follow you to the place where you go. 20
Yeshua said to him: “For foxes there are holes, and for the birds of
heaven there are nests; but for the Son of Man, there is nowhere he may
rest his head.” 21 And another of his talmidim said to him: “Mari, allow
me first to go and bury my father.” 22 But Yeshua said to him: “Follow
me, and leave the dead to bury their dead.” 23 And when Yeshua went up
into the ship, his talmidim went up with him.
24 And behold, a great storm was on the sea, so that the
ship was covered by the waves. And by this time Yeshua was asleep. 25
His talmidim came to him and woke him up, saying to him: “Maran*,
deliver us; we are perishing!” 26 Yeshua said to them: “Why are you so
afraid, oh little of faith!” Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the
sea; and there came to be a great calmness. 27 And the men were amazed;
and they said: “Who is this that the winds and the sea are obedient to
him!”
28 When Yeshua arrived on the other side, in the area of
the Gadarenes, there were two people that were possessed who met him,
who had come out from the cemetery, very enraged, so that no one could
pass by that way. 29 And they cried out, and said: “What have we to do
with you? Yeshua ben Elohim, have you come here before the time to
torment us?” 30 And at a distance from them there was a large herd of
swine feeding 31 and the demons begged him, and said: “If you cast us
out, allow us to go into the herd of swine.” 32 And Yeshua said to them,
“Go!” And immediately they came out, and entered into the swine; and
that whole herd ran straight to a cliff and plunged into the sea, and
perished in the waters. 33 And those who were herding fled, and entered
the city and told of all that had happened, and concerning the people
who were possessed. 34 And all those in the village came out to meet
with Yeshua and when they saw him, they begged him to depart from their
borders.
Chapter 9
1 And he entered the ship, and passed over and came to
his own city. 2 And they brought to him a certain paralytic, lying on a
bed. And Yeshua saw their faith, and said to the paralytic: “Take
courage, my son; your sins are forgiven of you.” 3 And some of the
scribes said in their minds, “This man commits blasphemy.” 4 But Yeshua
knew their thoughts and he said to them, “Why do you think evil in your
heart? 5 For, which is the easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven of
you;’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk?’ 6 But that you may know that the Son
of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins, he said to the paralytic:
‘Arise, take up your bed, and go to your home.’ 7 And he arose and went
to his home.”
8 And when the crowds saw this they were in fear; and
they praised Elohim, who had given authority like this to men.
9 And as Yeshua passed on from there, he saw a man
sitting at the customs house, whose name was Mattai. And he said to him,
“Follow me”; and he arose and followed him. 10 And as they reclined in
the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and reclined with Yeshua
and with his talmidim.
11 And when the Pharisees saw this they said to his
talmidim, “Why does your Rabbi eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12
And when Yeshua heard this, he said to them: “Those who are healthy have
no need of a physician, rather those that are very poor in health. 13 Go
and learn what is meant by this: ‘I require mercy*, and not a
sacrifice!’ For I did not come to call on the righteous, but on the
sinners.”
14 Then the talmidim of Yochanan came to him, and said:
“Why do we and the Pharisees fast often and your talmidim do not fast?”
15 Yeshua said to them: “Can the children of the marriage chamber fast,
so long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the
bridegroom will be taken from them, and then they will fast. 16 No man
puts a piece of new cloth on an old garment; in case it tears away from
the garment, and the hole becomes greater. 17 And they do not put new
wine into old wineskins in case the wineskins burst, and the wine runs
out, and the wineskins become destroyed. Rather they put new wine into
new wineskins and both of them are preserved.”
18 And while he was speaking with them a certain ruler
came, drew near, worshipped him and said: “My daughter is already dead,
but come lay your hand upon her, and she will live.” 19 And Yeshua
arose, and his talmidim followed after him.
20 And behold, a woman whose blood had flowed twelve
years, came up behind him, and touched the edge of his clothing 21 for
she had said in her mind, ‘If only I touch his garment I shall be
cured.’ 22 And Yeshua turned, looked at her, and said to her: “Take
courage, my daughter, your faith has given you life.” And the woman was
cured from that very moment.
23 And Yeshua came to the house of the ruler and he saw
that there were pipers and a crowd making a lot of noise. 24 And he said
to them: “Leave, for the girl is not dead, but is asleep.” And they
laughed at him. 25 And when he had dismissed the crowd, he entered and
took her by the hand, and the girl rose up.
26 And the news of what had taken place spread throughout
all this land.
27 When Yeshua had passed from there, two blind men
followed after him, and said: “Have mercy on us, Ben David!” 28 And when
he had entered a house, those blind men approached him, and Yeshua said
to them: “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him:
“Yes, Maran.” 29 Then he touched their eyes, and said: “As you have
believed, so shall it be to you.” 30 And immediately their eyes were
opened. And Yeshua instructed them saying: “See to it that no man knows
of this.” 31 But they went out and spread the news of it in all of that
area.
32 And as Yeshua went out, they brought to him a certain
mute man in whom was a demon. 33 And when the demon had left him, the
mute man was able to speak. And the crowds were amazed, and said: “Never
was it so seen in Yisrael!” 34 But the Pharisees said: “It is by the
chief of demons that he casts out demons.”
35 And Yeshua went throughout all the cities and the
villages and he taught in their synagogues, and proclaimed the hope of
the kingdom, and healed all of their diseases and sicknesses.
36 And when Yeshua saw the crowds, he felt compassion for
them, because they were weary and were scattered like sheep that do not
have a shepherd. 37 And he said to his talmidim: “The harvest is great,
and the labourers few. 38 Pray, therefore, from the Lord of the
harvest*, that he will send labourers into his harvest.”
Chapter 10
1 And he called his twelve talmidim to him, and gave them
authority over unclean spirits to cast them out, and to heal every pain
and disease. 2 And the names of those twelve Apostles are: The first of
them, Shimon who is called Keipha, and Andreos his brother; and Ya’aqub
ben Zavddai, and Yochanan his brother; 3 and Pilipus, and Bar Tulmai,
and Thoma, and Mattai the tax collector; and Ya’aqub ben Chalpai, and
Levi who was called Taddai; 4 and Shimon the Canaanite, and Yudah
Skariota, he who betrayed him.
5 These twelve Yeshua sent forth and he commanded them
saying: “Do not go in the way of the heathen: and do not enter the
cities of the Samaritans. 6 But, rather go to the lost sheep of the
house of Yisrael. 7 And as you go, proclaim and say: ‘The kingdom of
heaven has approached.’
8 “Heal the sick; cleanse the leprous; and cast out
demons. Freely you have received; freely give. 9 Do not carry gold, nor
silver, nor brass in your purses; 10 nor a wallet for the journey:
neither two coats, nor shoes, nor a staff. For the labourer is worthy of
his food. 11 And into whatever city or village you enter, ask who in it
is worthy; and stay there until you depart. 12 And when you enter into a
house, ask for peace to be upon the household. 13 And if the house is
worthy, your peace will come upon it; but if it is not worthy, your
peace will return upon you. 14 And whoever will not receive you, nor
hear your words, when you depart from that house or that village, shake
off the dust from your feet.
15 “Truly I say to you, that it will be more peaceful for
the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the Day of Judgment, than for that
city. 16 Behold, I send you as lambs among wolves; therefore you should
be more discerning than serpents and you should be as harmless as doves.
17 “And beware of the B’nai Adam*; for they will deliver
you over to a beit din*, and will scourge you within their assemblies.
18 And they will bring you before governors and kings, on my account,
for a testimony to them and to the goyim. 19 And when they deliver you
up, do not be anxious as to how or what you shall speak, for it shall be
given to you in that hour what to say. 20 For it is not you that speak,
but the spirit of your Father speaking in you.
21 “And a brother will deliver up his brother to death,
and a father his son; and children will rise up against their parents,
and kill them. 22 And every one on account of my name will hate you. But
whoever endures until the end shall have life*.
23 “And when they persecute you in one city, flee to
another; for truly I say to you, You shall not have completed all the
cities of the House of Yisrael, until the Son of Man shall come.
24 “There is no talmid that is greater than his rabbi;
nor is a servant greater than his master. 25 It is sufficient for a
talmid to become like his rabbi; and the servant, as his master. If they
call the master of the house by the name ‘Beelzebub’, how much more the
children of his family?
26 “Therefore do not have fear of them; for there is
nothing that is covered, that shall not be revealed; nor that which is
hidden, that shall not become known. 27 What I say to you in the dark,
you shall speak in the light; and what you have heard with your ears,
proclaim on the rooftops. 28 And do not have fear of those who kill the
body, but are not able to kill the soul; but have fear rather of Him who
has the ability to destroy both the soul and the body in Gehinnom.
29 “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of
them falls to the earth without the knowledge* of your Father. 30 As for
you, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Therefore do not
be afraid: you are more important than many sparrows. 32 Therefore,
whoever shall confess me before men, I will also confess him before my
Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever shall deny me before men, I will
also deny him before my Father who is in heaven.
34 “Do not think that I have come to bring calmness on
the earth; I have not come to bring calmness, rather a sword*. 35 For I
have come to divide a man from his father, and a daughter from her
mother, and a daughter-in-law from her mother-in-law. 36 And the enemies
of a man will be from among his own household. 37 He that loves father
or mother more than me, is not worthy of me. He that loves son or
daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 He that does not take up
his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. 39 He that finds his
soul will lose it and he who loses his soul for my sake will find it.*
40 “He that accepts you accepts me; and he that accepts
me, accepts him that sent me. 41 He that accepts a prophet in the name
of a prophet shall receive the reward of a prophet. He that accepts a
tzadik* in the name of a tzadik shall receive the reward of a righteous
man. 42 Anyone who gives a drink to one of these little ones, a cup of
cold water, in the name of a talmid, truly I say to you, that he will
not lose his reward.”
Chapter 11
1 When Yeshua had concluded giving instructions to his
twelve talmidim, he departed from there to teach and to preach in their
cities.
2 Now when Yochanan, in the house of prisoners, heard of
the works of Mashiach, he sent a message by way of his talmidim, 3 and
said to him: “Are you he that comes, or are we to expect another?” 4
Yeshua answered, saying to them: “Go, tell Yochanan the things that you
hear and see: 5 the blind see, and the lame walk, and the lepers are
cleansed, and the deaf hear, and the dead rise up, and the needy hear
good tidings; 6 and happy is he who shall not be stumbled at me.”
7 And after they left, Yeshua began to say to the crowds
concerning Yochanan: “What did you go out to the wilderness to see, a
reed that was shaken by the wind? 8 And if not what did you go out to
see? A man who was wearing soft robes? Behold, they that are clothed in
soft robes are among kings. 9 And if not what did you go out to see? A
prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 10 For this is he
of whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send my messenger ahead of you, that
he may prepare the way before you.’
11 “Truly I say to you, among those born of women, there
has not arisen one who is greater than Yochanan the Baptiser, yet the
least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 And from the days
of Yochanan the Baptiser, until now, the kingdom of heaven began to be
attacked and plundered. 13 For all the prophets and the Torah
prophesied concerning* Yochanan. 14 And, if you are willing, receive,
that this is Eliyahu who was to come. 15 He that has ears to hear, let
him hear! 16 But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like
children that sit in the street and call out to their friends, 17
saying:
‘We
have sung and you did not dance; we have mourned, and you did not
lament.’
18 “For Yochanan came, not eating and not drinking and
they said, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came, eating and drinking
and they say: ‘Behold, a gluttonous man, and a wine drinker, and a
friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ Wisdom is proven by the works it
produces.”
20 Then Yeshua began to revile the cities in which his
miracles were done; however they did not repent. 21 And he said: “Woe to
you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Beitsaida! For if the miracles which had been
done in you had also been done in Tyre and Tsidon, without a doubt, they
would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I say to you
that it will be more peaceful for Tyre and Tsidon, in the Day of
Judgment, than for you. 23 And you, K’far Nachum, which has been raised
up to heaven, will be brought down to Sheol. For if those miracles that
were done in you had been done in Sodom, she would still be standing to
this day. 24 But I say to you that it will be more peaceful for the land
of Sodom, in the Day of Judgment, than for you.”
25 At that time, giving thanks to the Father, Yeshua
answered saying: “I am grateful to you, O my Father, Lord of heaven and
earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and the
intelligent, and you have revealed them to the children. 26 Yes, my
Father, for such was your desire. 27 Every thing has been delivered up
to from my Father. And no man knows the Son, except the Father. Also, no
man knows the Father, except the Son, and he to whom the Son is pleased
to make known.
28 “Come to me, all you who labour and bear burdens, and
I will give you rest. 29 Bear my yoke upon you and learn from me, that I
am peaceful and meek in my heart and you will find peace in your souls
30 for my yoke is pleasant, and my burden is light. 31 The one who
learns the meaning of this will be amazed, and having been amazed he
shall reign and after reigning he shall find rest.
Chapter 12
1 At that time Yeshua was walking on Shabbat in the
fields and his talmidim became hungry, and began to pick grain to eat. 2
But when the Pharisees saw them they said to him: “Behold! Your talmidim
are doing that which it is not lawful on Shabbat.” 3 But he said to
them: “Have you not read what David did when he hungered, and those who
were with him? 4 How he went into the House of Elohim, and ate the bread
of the altar of YHWH, which was not lawful for him to eat, or for those
that were with him, but only for the priests? 5 Or have you not read in
Torah, that the priests in Beit ha'Mikdash disregard Shabbat, and are
without blame? 6 But I say to you, that there is one greater than Beit
ha'Mikdash here. 7 But if only you would have known that I desire mercy,
and not sacrifice, then you would not have condemned those that are
without blame. 8 For the Lord of Shabbat is the Son of Man.”
9 Departing from there Yeshua came to their assembly. 10
And a certain man was there, with a hand that was withered. The man
said: “Mari, I was a stone-cutter using my hands to provide food for my
household; I beg of you, Yeshua, to heal me, so that I no longer walk in
shame begging for food.” And they were asking him saying: “Is it lawful
to heal on Shabbat?” that they might accuse him [[of wrong doing]]. 11
And he said to them: “Who among you men, having a sheep that falls into
a pit on the day of Shabbat, does not grab it and lift it out? 12 Now,
how much important is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do
that which is good on Shabbat.” 13 Then he said to that man: “Stretch
out your hand.” And he stretched out his hand and it was restored like
the other.
14 And the Pharisees went out taking counsel together
concerning him, that they might destroy him. 15 But Yeshua knew this,
and he withdrew himself from there. And large crowds followed after him
and he healed all of them. 16 And he instructed them that they should
not reveal him,
17 so that it might be fulfilled that which was spoken
through the prophet Isaiah, saying:
18 Behold my servant! I am pleased with my beloved, my
soul rejoices.
I will place my spirit upon him; and he shall declare
judgment to all the peoples.
19 He will not argue, nor be boisterous, and no man will
hear his voice in the street.
20 The crushed reed he will not break and the lamp that
is flickering he will not extinguish until he brings justice to victory.
21 And in his name the peoples will have hope.*
22 Then they brought to him a certain possessed man that
was mute and blind; and he healed him, so that the mute and blind man
could both speak and see. 23 And everyone in the crowd was amazed, and
said: “Is this not the son of David?” 24 But when the Pharisees heard
this, they said: “This man does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub
the head of demons.” 25 However, Yeshua knew what they were thinking and
said to them: “A kingdom that is divided against itself will be
destroyed; and a house or city that is divided against itself will not
stand. 26 And if the accuser cast out the accuser, he is divided against
himself; how then does his kingdom stand? 27 And if I by Beelzebub cast
out demons, by what do your sons cast them out? Because of this they
will be your judges. 28 But if by the Spirit of Elohim I cast out
demons, the Kingdom of Elohim has come near to you.
29 Or how is a man able enter into the house of a strong
man, and plunder his possessions, unless he first binds the strong man
and then plunder his house?
30 Whoever is not with me is against me; and whoever does
not gather with me scatters. 31 Therefore I say to you, that all sins
and blasphemies will be forgiven of the sons of men, but the blasphemy
that is against the Spirit will not be forgiven of the sons of men. 32
And anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, he will be
forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit, he will not be
forgiven, not in this world and not in the world to come*.
33 Either make the tree satisfying and its fruits
satisfying, or make the tree bad, and its fruits bad; for a tree is
known by its fruits. 34 Generation of vipers, how are you who are evil,
able to speak good things? For from the fullness of the heart the mouth
speaks. 35 A good man out of good treasures brings forth good, and a bad
man out of bad treasures brings forth bad. 36 For I say to you that for
every vain word that the sons of men speak, they will give an account of
it in the Day of Judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified
and by your words you will be condemned.”
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered,
saying to him: “Rabbi, we desire to see a sign from you.” 39 And he
answered them saying: “A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign
but a sign will not be given to it, unless it is the sign of Yona the
prophet. 40 For as Yona was in the belly of the fish, likewise the Son
of Man will be in the heart of the earth. 41 The Ninevite men will stand
in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it for they
repented due to the preaching of Yona. Behold! One greater than Yona is
here.
42 The queen of the south will stand in the judgment with
this generation and will condemn it because she came from the ends of
the earth to hear the wisdom of Shlomo. Behold! There is one that is
more than Shlomo here. 43 Now when an unclean spirit goes out from a
man, it wanders in places that have no water in them, and seeks rest but
does not find it. 44 Then it says: ‘I will return to my house, from
where I came out.’ And when it comes, it finds it empty, and swept and
properly arranged. 45 Then it will go and bring with it seven other
spirits, who are worse than itself, and they will enter and dwell in it,
and the end of the man is worse than his beginning. It will be the same
for this evil generation.”
46 And while he was speaking to the crowds, his mother
and his brothers came and were standing outside, and they wanted to
speak with him. 47 And then a man said to him: “Behold, your mother and
your brothers are standing outside, and they wish to speak with you.” 48
But he answered, and said to him that had spoken to him: “Who is my
mother? and who are my brothers?” 49 And he stretched forth his hand
towards his talmidim, and said: “Behold my mother, and behold my
brothers! 50 For anyone that does the will of my Father who is in
heaven, is my brother and my sister and my mother.”
Chapter 13
1 Now on that day Yeshua went out from the house, and sat
by the side of the sea. 2 And large crowds assembled around him so that
he went up to sit on a boat, and the entire crowd was standing on the
shore of the sea. 3 And he was speaking much with them in parables. And
he said:
“Behold!
A sower went out to sow, 4 and as he was sowing some of the seed fell
upon the side of a path and a bird came and devoured it. 5 And other
seed fell upon a rock, so that it did not have much soil and immediately
it sprouted, because there was no depth to the ground. 6 But when the
sun came it became hot and because it lacked root, it wilted and dried
up. 7 And other seed fell into an area of thorns and when the thorns
sprang up, they choked it. 8 And other seed fell on good ground and bore
fruits, some a hundred, some sixty, and some thirty. 9 He that has ears
to hear let him hear.”
10 And his disciples approached him saying: “Why do you
speak with them in parables?” 11 And he answered, and said to them: “To
you it is given to know the mystery of the Kingdom of Heaven, but it is
not given to them. 12 For to him who has, it shall be given, and it
shall be increased to him; but from him that does not have, even what he
does have shall be taken from him. 13 For this reason I will speak to
them in parables, because they see and do not see, and they hear and do
not hear, nor do they understand. 14 And in them the prophecy of Isaiah
is fulfilled, who said:
‘You
indeed hear,
but do
not understand;
and indeed you see,
but do
not perceive.
15 Make the heart of this people hard.
Make
their ears hard of hearing, and shut their eyes;
lest they see with their eyes,
and hear
with their ears,
and
understand with their heart,
and turn
again, and be healed.' *
16 “But to you, your eyes are blessed, for they see, and
your ears, for they hear. 17 For truly I say to you, that many prophets
and tzadikim have longed to see the things that you see, and they did
not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. 18 But you
hear the parable of the seed. 19 Every one who hears the word of the
Kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away
the word that was sown in his heart; this is that which was sown on the
side of the road. 20 And that which was sown on the stony area of earth,
is he that hears the word, and at once accepts it with joy. 21 But
having no root in him, he is of a short extent, and when trouble or
persecution comes on account of the word, he is quickly offended. 22 And
that which was sown in the thorny area is he that hears the word and the
cares of this world and the deception of riches choke the word, and he
becomes as one having no fruit. 23 But that which was sown on good
ground, is he that hears my word and understands and produces fruit,
some a hundred, some sixty, and some thirty.”
24 He spoke another parable before them saying: “The
Kingdom of heaven is like to a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25
And when the people were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed tares among
the wheat and left. 26 And when the blade sprang up and bore fruit, then
the tares also appeared. 27 And the servants of the house of the master
approached, saying to him: ‘Our master, behold! Did you not sow good
seed in your field? From where did the tares come?’ 28 And he said to
them, ‘A man, an enemy, has done this.’ The servants said to him: ‘Do
you desire for us to go pluck them out?’ 29 But he said to them: ‘No, in
case, while you are plucking out the tares, you also uproot the wheat
with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time
of harvest, I will say to the reapers: ‘First pluck out the tares, and
bind them in bundles to be burned; but gather the wheat into my store
houses.’”
31 He spoke another parable before them saying: “The
Kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, that a man took
and sowed in his field. 32 And it is smaller than of all the small
seeds; but when it grows, it is greater than all the small herbs, and
becomes a tree, so that a bird of heaven comes and nests in its
branches.”
33 And he told them another parable: “The Kingdom of
heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and buried in three measures
of flour, until all is leavened.”
34 All these things Yeshua spoke in parables to the crowd
and he did not speak with them without parables 35 so that it might be
fulfilled that which was spoken through the prophet, who said:
“Hear
my teaching, my people.
Turn your
ears to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable.
I will
reveal the secret things that were before the foundation of the world.”*
36 Then Yeshua left the crowds, and went into the house
and his talmidim drew near to him, and said: “Explain to us the parables
of the tares and of the field.” 37 And he answered, saying to them: “He
who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the earth and
the good seed are the sons of the kingdom; and the tares are the sons of
the wicked One. 39 The enemy who sowed them is the accuser. The harvest
is the end of the world and the reapers are the angels. 40 As therefore
the tares are plucked and burned in the fire; this is how it will be in
the end of this world. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they
will pluck out of his Kingdom all the stumbling blocks and all the
workers of wickedness; 42 and they will cast them into the furnace of
fire. And there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the
righteous will shine as the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. He who
has ears to hear, let him hear.
44 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure that
is hidden in a field which a man finds and hides in it, and from his joy
he goes and sells everything that he owns, and buys that field again. 45
Again, the Kingdom of heaven is like a man who is a merchant, who was
seeking after good pearls 46 and when he found a certain precious pearl,
he went and sold everything that he owned, and bought it. 47 Again, the
Kingdom of heaven is like a net that was cast into the sea, and every
kind of fish was gathered into it. 48 And when it was full, they pulled
it out to the seashore and they sat down and sorted them placing the
good into containers, and the bad they threw away. 49 This is how it
will be in the end of the world. The angels will go out and separate the
wicked from among the righteous; 50 and they will cast them into a
furnace of fire. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
51 Yeshua said to them: “Do you understand all of these
things?” They say to him: “Yes, Maran.”
52 He said to them: “Because of this every scribe who is
instructed for the Kingdom of heaven is like a man who is the master of
a house, who brings out from his treasures the new and the old.”
53 So when Yeshua had finished these parables he departed
from there. 54 And he came to his own city. And he taught them in their
assemblies, in such a way that they were amazed, and they said: “From
where has this wisdom and these miracles come? 55 Is this not the son of
the carpenter? Is his mother not called Maryam, and his brothers Ya'aqub
and Yosef and Shimon and Yudah? 56 And are not all of his sisters with
us? From where, then, does this man obtain all these things?”
57 And they were offended by him. But Yeshua said to
them: “There is no prophet who is ridiculed, except in his own city and
in his own home.” 58 And he did not do many miracles there, due to their
unbelief.
Chapter 14
1 Now it was in that that time that Herodus the Tetrarch
heard the news of Yeshua: 2 and he said to his servants: “This is
Yochanan the Baptiser; he is risen from the grave, because of this
miracles are done by him.”
3 Now Herodus had seized Yochanan, and bound him and had
cast him into prison due to Herodia, the wife of his brother Pilipus. 4
For Yochanan had said to him: “It is not lawful that she be your wife.”
5 And he had desired to murder him; but he was afraid of the people,
because they recognised him as a prophet. 6 But when the occasion of the
birthday of Herodus came, the daughter of Herodia danced before the
guests and she pleased Herodus. 7 And thus he swore to her by an oath,
that he would give to her anything that she requested. 8 And she,
because her mother instructed her, said: “Give me here in a plate the
head of Yochanan the Baptiser.”
9 And it saddened the king; but due to the oath, and the
guests, he commanded that it be given to her. 10 And he sent and cut off
the head of Yochanan in prison. 11 And he had his head brought on a
plate and had it given to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 12
And his talmidim came and took away his corpse, and buried it; and they
came and made this known to Yeshua.
13 And when Yeshua had heard this, he departed from there
in a ship alone to the desert. And when the multitudes heard of this
they followed him by dry land from the cities. 14 And when the crowds
heard they followed after him by dry land through the cities. Yeshua
went out saw the large crowds and he had compassion on them, and healed
them of their sicknesses.
15 And when it became evening, his talmidim approached
him saying to him: “This is a desert place, and the time has passed;
send away the crowds of people so that they may go to the villages, and
buy food for themselves.” 16 But he said to them: “It is not necessary
for them to go; you give them food to eat.” 17 But they said to him: “We
have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” 18 Yeshua said to
them: “Bring them here to me.” 19 And he commanded the crowds to sit on
the ground and he took the five loaves of bread and two fish, and he
looked into the heavens, and blessed them, and broke them, and gave them
to his talmidim; and the talmidim placed them before the crowds. 20 And
they all ate, and all of them were satisfied and they took up all of the
fragments, twelve full baskets. 21 And the men who had eaten were five
thousand, besides the women and children.
22 And immediately he told his talmidim to enter into the
ship, and to go before him to the opposite side, while he instructed the
crowds to leave. 23 And when he had sent the crowds away, he went up to
a mountain alone to pray. And when it became dark, he was there alone.
24 And the boat was a great distance from the land and it
was greatly being tossed by the waves; for the wind was against it. 25
And in the fourth watch of the night, Yeshua came up to them, walking on
the waters. 26 And his talmidim saw that he was walking on the water,
and they were frightened and were saying: “A false vision!” And they
cried out due to their fear. 27 But Yeshua immediately spoke with them,
and said: “Have courage.
It is I; do not be afraid.” 28 Keipha answered and said
to him: “Mari, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29
And Yeshua said to him: “Come.” And Keipha got out of the ship and
walked on the waters to go to Yeshua. 30 But when he saw that the wind
was strong, he began to fear, and began to sink. And he raised his
voice, and said: “Mari, save me!” 31 And immediately Maran stretched out
his hand, and grabbed onto him, and said to him: “Oh little of faith,
why did you doubt!” 32 And when they got on the ship, the wind quieted
down. 33 And those who were on the ship came and worshipped him saying:
“Truly you are Ben Elohim!”
34 And they sailed coming into the land of Ginesar. 35
The men in that place recognised him and they sent a message to all the
villages surrounding them; and they drew near to him, all who were very
sick; 36 and they were begging him that they might touch at least the
edge of his clothing. And those who touched were healed.
Chapter 15
1 Then the Pharisees and Scribes that were from
Yerushalayim came to Yeshua, and said: 2 “Why do your talmidim
transgress against the traditions of the elders, and not wash their
hands when they eat bread?”
3 Yeshua answered saying to them: “Why do you also
transgress the mitzvah of Elohim because of your traditions? 4 For
Elohim has said: ‘Honour your father, and your mother; and he that
reviles his father and his mother, let him be put to death.’ 5 But you
say: ‘anyone who says to a father or to a mother: ‘korban is what you
should receive from us;’ then he must not honour his father or his
mother.’ 6 You nullify the Word of Elohim because of your tradition. 7
You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy concerning you, saying:
8 ‘This people honour me with the lips, but their heart
is very far from me. 9 And in vain they revere me, while they teach the
doctrines of the commandments of the sons of men.’”
10 And he cried out to the crowds, and said to them:
“Listen and understand! 11 It is not what enters the mouth that defiles
a man, but that which proceeds out from the mouth that defiles a man.”
12 Then his talmidim approached and said to him: “Do you
know that the Pharisees who heard these words were offended?” 13 He then
answered them saying: “Every plant that my Father who is in heaven did
not plant, will be uprooted. 14 Let them be; they are blind leaders of
the blind. And if a blind man leads one blind, they will both fall into
a pit.
15 And Shimon Keipha answered him saying: “Mari, explain
this parable to us.” 16 And he said to them: “And now, you do not
understand? 17 Do you not know that whatever enters the mouth, goes into
the stomach, and from there is cast out by excrement? 18 But that which
proceeds from the mouth, comes from the heart, and it becomes defilement
to a man. 19 For what comes from the heart are evil thoughts, adultery,
murder, fornication, theft, false testimony, and blasphemy. 20 These are
what defile a man. But if a man eats while his hands are not washed, he
is not defiled.
21 And Yeshua departed from there, and went to the border
of Tyre and Tsidon.
22 Behold, a Canaanite woman came forth from those
borders crying out saying: “Have mercy on me, Mari, Son of David: my
daughter is critically distressed by a devil.” 23 But he did not answer
her a word. And his talmidim drew near and begged him saying: “Send her
away, because she cries after us.” 24 But he answered and said to them:
“I have not been sent, except to the sheep that have strayed from the
House of Yisrael.” 25 And she came, and worshipped him, and said: “Help
me, Mari.” 26 And he said to her: “It is not good to take the bread of
the children and cast it to the dogs.” 27 And she said: “Yes, but Mari,
even the dogs eat of the crumbs that fall from the tables of their
masters and live.” 28 Then Yeshua said to her: “O woman, great is your
faith; let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from
that moment.
29 Now Yeshua departed from there, and came to the
seashore of Galil. He then went up to a mountain, and sat there. 30 And
large crowds drew near to him that had with them those who were lame,
blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them at the feet of
Yeshua, and he healed them. 31 So amazed were the crowds, when they saw
the mute speaking, and the maimed made whole, and the lame walking, and
the blind seeing, that they praised the Elohim of Yisrael.
32 Then Yeshua called his talmidim, and said to them: “I
have mercy for this crowd; look, these three days they have remained
with me and they do not have anything in which they might eat, and I do
not desire to send them away fasting, in case they faint by the way.” 33
His talmidim said to him: “Where is bread for us in the desert that we
may satisfy all this crowd?” 34 Yeshua said to them: “How many loaves of
bread do you have?” They said to him: “Seven, and a few small fish.” 35
And he commanded the crowds to sit on the ground. 36 And he took those
seven loaves of bread and the fish, and gave thanks, and broke them, and
gave them to his talmidim; and the talmidim gave them to the crowds. 37
And all of them ate and were satisfied. And they took up the remains of
fragments, seven full baskets. 38 And those who had eaten numbered four
thousand men, besides the women and children. 39 And when he had
instructed the crowds to leave, he got into a ship, and came to the
border of Magdo*.
Chapter 16
1 Now the Pharisees and Sadducees drew near, tempting
him, and asking him to show them a sign from heaven. 2* But he answered,
and said to them: 4 “An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign;
but no sign will be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Yona.”
And he left them, and departed from there.
5 And when his talmidim came to the other side, they had
forgotten to take bread with them. 6 But he said to them: “Take
attention, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
7 And they were reasoning among themselves saying it was because they
had no taken bread. 8 But Yeshua knew and said to them: “Oh little of
faith! Why do you reason among yourselves because you did not take
bread? 9 Do you not yet understand? Do you not remember those five
loaves of bread and the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?
10 Nor those seven loaves of bread and the four thousand, and the many
baskets you took up? 11 How do you not understand that it was not
concerning bread that I spoke to you; but that you should be aware of
the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?” 12 Then they
understood that he did not say to be aware of the leaven of bread, but
of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
13 And when Yeshua came into the region of Caesarea of
Philippi, he was asking his talmidim, saying: “What do men say
concerning me, that I am a Son of Man?” 14 And they said: “Some say
Yochanan the Baptiser; but others, Eliyahu; and others, Yeremi’ya, or
one of the prophets. “15 He said to them: “But who do you say that I
am?” 16 Shimon Keipha answered and said: “You are the Anointed, the Son
of the living Elohim.” 17 Yeshua answered, and said to him: “Blessed are
you, Shimon ben Yochanan*; because flesh and blood have not revealed
this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 Also I say to you, that
you are Keipha, and upon this rock, I will build my Assembly, and the
gates of Sheol shall not suppress it.”
19 Turning to the twelve he said*: “I will give to all of
you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven and anything that you bind on
earth will be bound in heaven, and the thing you loose on earth, will be
loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he commanded his talmidim that to men they
should not say he was the Messiah.
21 From that time on, Yeshua began to make known to his
talmidim that he was to go to Yerushalayim and to suffer much from the
elders, and the chief priests and scribes, and he would be murdered, and
that on the third day would rise up. 22 But Keipha took him and began
rebuking him saying: “Far be it from you, Mari, that this should happen
to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Keipha: “Get behind me, accuser;
you are a stumbling block to me because you do not think the things of
Elohim, rather the things of the sons of men.”
24 Then Yeshua said to his talmidim: “He who wishes to
follow after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow
after me. 25 For, he who desires to save his life shall lose it; and he
who loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit
a man, if he gains the whole world, and loses his soul? What will a man
give in exchange for his soul? 27 It is necessary for the Son of Man is
to come in the glory of his Father, with all his holy angels; and then
he will reward every man according to his works. 28 Truly I say to you,
that there are some men who are standing here who will not taste death
until they see the Son of Man come into his Kingdom.”
Chapter 17
1 And after six days Yeshua led Keipha and Ya'aqub, and
Yochanan his brother, taking them alone up to a high mountain. 2 And
Yeshua was transformed before them and his face was bright like the sun;
and his clothing became white like the light. 3 And Mosha and Eliyahu
appeared to them, speaking with him. 4 Then Keipha answered saying to
Yeshua: “Mari, it is good for us that we are here, and if you desire,
let us construct here three shelters; one for you, and one for Mosha,
and one for Eliyahu.” 5 And while he was speaking, behold! A bright
cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came from the cloud saying: “This
is my beloved Son, in whom I am pleased; listen to him. 6 And when the
talmidim heard this, they fell on their faces and were very afraid. 7
And Yeshua approached them and touched them, and said: “Arise, and do
not be afraid.” 8 And they lifted up their eyes, and they did not see
anyone, except Yeshua alone.
9 While they were descending from the mountain, Yeshua
commanded them, and said to them: “Do not speak of this vision in the
presence of anyone, until the Son of Man arises from the dead.” 10 And
his talmidim asked him, and said to him: “Why then do the scribes say
that Eliyahu must come first?” 11 Yeshua answered and said: “Eliyahu
will come first, so that all things might be fulfilled. 12 But I say to
you that behold, Eliyahu has come, and they did not know him; and they
did to him whatever they desired. Likewise, also the Son of Man is to
suffer from them.”
13 The talmidim then understood that he spoke to them
concerning Yochanan the Baptiser.
14 And when they came to the crowds a man approached him
and bowed down on his knees*, 15 and said to him: “Mari, have mercy on
me. My son who has a demon is crucially afflicted; for he has fallen
into the fire many times and has fallen into the water many times. 16 So
I brought him to your talmidim and they were not able to heal him.” 17
Yeshua answered and said: “Oh unfaithful and stubborn* generation! How
long must I be with you? and how long must I endure with you? Bring him
here to me.” 18 And Yeshua rebuked it, and the demon left him, and from
that moment the boy was healed.
19 Then the talmidim drew near to Yeshua who was then
alone, and said to him: “Why were we not able to heal him?” 20 Yeshua
said to them: Because of your unbelief. For truly I say to you, that if
you had faith within you like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to
this mountain, ‘Move from here’, and it would move, and nothing would
triumph over you. 21 But this kind does not go out, except by fasting
and by prayer.”
22 While they were travelling in Galil, Yeshua said to
them: “The Son of Man will be betrayed into the hands of the sons of
men; 23 and they will murder him; and on the third day he will rise.”
And they were very saddened.
24 And when they came to K’far Nachum, those who were
collecting the two coins for the head tax came to Keipha, and said to
him: “Does your rabbi not pay his two coins?” 25 He said to them, “Yes.”
And when Keipha had entered the house, Yeshua anticipated him and said
to him: “What is that you think, Shimon? The kings of the earth, of whom
do they collect the head tax from their children or from strangers?” 26
Shimon said to him: “From strangers.” And Yeshua said to him: “Then the
children are free. 27 But in case this should offend them, go to the sea
and cast a hook and the first fish that comes up, open its mouth, and
you will find a coin; take it and give it for me and for you.”
Chapter 18
1 At that moment the talmidim drew near to Yeshua, and
said: “Who is, in fact, the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?” 2 And
Yeshua called a child and had him stand their midst, 3 and said: “Truly
I say to you, that unless you change*, and become like children, you
will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore he who humbles
himself like this child, he will be great in the Kingdom of heaven. 5
And he who receives one who is like this child in my name, he receives
me. 6 Anyone who stumbles* one of these little ones who believe in me,
it would be better for him that a millstone of a donkey were hung on his
neck, and that he were sunk into the depths of the sea. 7 Woe to the
world because of offenses*! For it is necessary that offenses should
come, but woe to the man by whose means the offenses come.
8 “If then your hand or your foot causes you to stumble,
cut it off and cast it from you; it is better for you to enter into life
while lame or while you are maimed, than while you have two hands or two
feet to fall into the everlasting fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to
stumble, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is better for you to
enter into life with one eye, than while with two eyes, to fall into the
fire of Gehinnom.* 10 Make sure you do not despise one of these little
ones; for I say to you, that their angels in heaven are beholding at all
times the face of my Father who is in heaven. 11 For the Son of Man, has
come to save that which was lost.
12 “What do you think of this? If a man had one hundred
sheep, and one of them strayed away, would he not leave the ninety-nine
in the mountains, and seek after the one that strayed? 13 And if he
finds it, truly I say to you, that he rejoices for it, more so than for
the ninety-nine that did not stray. 14 Likewise, it is not the desire of
your Father who is in heaven, that one of these little ones should
perish.
15 “If your brother has wronged you, go and rebuke him
between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won* your
brother. 16 And if he does not listen to you, take with you one or two
[[other brethren]], that at the mouth of two or three witnesses every
word is established. 17 And if he will also not listen to them, report
it to the congregation. And if he will also not listen to the
congregation, let him be to you as if he were a tax collector and like a
heathen. 18 Truly I say to you, that anything that you will bind on
earth, will be bound in heaven, and whatever you shall loose on earth,
will be loosed in heaven.
19 “Again I say to you, that if two of you should agree
on earth concerning every desire that they might ask, they shall have it
from the presence of my Father who is in heaven. 20 For where two or
three are assembled in my name, I am there with them.”
21 Then Keipha drew near to him, and said: “Adoni, how
many times, if my brother commits an offence against me, shall I forgive
him? Up to seven times?” 22 Yeshua said to him: “If your brother has
sinned by a single word, but he repents, receive him seven times each
day.’ And Keipha said to Yeshua: “Receive him seven times each day?” And
Yeshua said: “Yes, I tell you, seventy times seven times! For likewise
the prophets, after being anointed by the Holy Spirit, a word of sin was
found within them.” 23 Therefore the Kingdom of heaven is likened to a
king who desired to have an accounting with his servants. 24 And when he
began taking account they brought to him one who owed ten thousand
talents. 25 And when he had means in which to pay, his master commanded
him to be sold, him and his wife and his children, and everything that
he possessed, and repayment be made. 26 And that servant fell down
honouring him, saying: ‘My master, be patient with me, and I will repay
everything to you.’ 27 And his master had mercy on that servant, and
released him from his debt.
28 “Then that servant went out, and found one of his
fellow servants who owed him a small amount*. And he grabbed him and was
choking him, and said to him: ‘Give me what you owe me.’ 29 And that
fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying: ‘Be patient
with me, and I will repay you everything.’ 30 But he would not [[show
mercy to him]], but went and cast him into prison, until he paid
everything owed to him. 31 And when their fellow servants saw what had
been done, they became very saddened; and they came and made it known to
their master everything that had taken place. 32 Then his master called
him, and said to him: ‘You evil servant! Behold! I forgave you of the
entire debt because you begged me. 33 Was it not right for you also to
have mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you? 34 And his
master was angry, and delivered him over to the prison, until he repaid
all that he owed him. 35 Likewise, my Father who is in heaven will do to
you, unless you forgive the offenses of every brother from your heart.”
Chapter 19
1 And after Yeshua had concluded with these words, he
departed from Galil, and came to the border of Yudah on the other side
of the Yordan. 2 And large crowds came and followed after him, and he
healed them there.
3 And Pharisees also came to him, and were tempting him
saying: “Is it in accordance with the law for a man to divorce his wife
for any reason?” 4 But he answered and said to them: “Have you not read,
that he who created them at the beginning, male and female? 5 And he
said: ‘Because of this, a man shall leave his father and his mother, and
be joined to his wife, and both of them will be one flesh.’ 6 Therefore
they will not be two, but one flesh. Therefore what Elohim has united
man should not separate.” 7 They said to him: “Why then did Mosha
command to give a permit of divorce, and to put her away?” 8 He said to
them: “Because of the hardness of your heart, Mosha permitted you to
divorce* your wives; but from the beginning it was this way. 9 But I say
to you, that whoever leaves his wife outside of adultery, and takes
another, commits adultery. And if he takes a divorced woman, he commits
adultery.”
10 His talmidim said to him: “If it is this complexity
between husband and wife, it is not worthwhile to take a wife.” 11 But
he said to them: “Not every one is capable of understanding this word,
but only to whom it is given. 12 For there are some eunuchs, who were
born from the womb of their mother; and there are some eunuchs, who
became eunuchs because of men; and there are those eunuchs who chose to
be eunuchs for the sake of the Kingdom of heaven. He who is able to
comprehend let him comprehend.”
13 Then children drew near to him, that he might lay his
hand upon them and pray. And his talmidim rebuked them. 14 But Yeshua
said to them: “Allow the children to come to me, and do not hinder them;
for the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such.” 15 And he laid his hand on
them, and departed from there.
16 And two men* came and drew near and one said to him:
“Good Rabbi, what good should I do, that I should have eternal life?” 17
And he said to him: “Why do you call me good? There is none good, except
one, Elohim. But if you desire enter into life, keep the Mitzvoth*. 18
He said to him: “Which ones?” And Yeshua said to him: “You shall not
murder; and you shall not commit adultery; and you shall not steal; and
you shall not bear false witness; 19 and honour your father and your
mother; and you shall love you neighbour as yourself.” 20 Then the other
man* said to him: “Rabbi, how do I gain eternal life?” 21 Yeshua said to
him: “If you desire to obtain eternal life then you must fulfil the
Torah and the Prophets.” He answered him saying: “This I done.” Yeshua
then said to him: “Go and sell everything that you possess and give it
over to those who are without; and come, and follow me.” This word
distressed the man and he was not pleased. And Yeshua said to him:
“Have you not read in the Torah, ‘You shall love your neighbour as
yourself?’ How is it that you say you have fulfilled the Torah and the
Prophets, when in fact your very kinsmen, being B’nai Avraham, thirst
and hunger, yet your storehouses are full? Go and sell your
possessions, and give to those who are without, and you will have
treasure in heaven.” 22 And upon hearing this word the young man became
saddened and went away, for he had many possessions.
23 And Yeshua turned to Shimon and then said to his
talmidim: “Truly I say to you, it is difficult for a rich man to enter
into the Kingdom of heaven. 24 And again, I say to you: It is easier for
a rope to enter the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the
Kingdom of Elohim.” 25 And when the talmidim heard this, they were
especially amazed, saying: “Indeed, who then is able to gain life!” 26
Yeshua looked at them, and said to them: “With men this is not possible,
but with Elohim every thing is possible.”
27 Then Keipha answered, and said to him: “Behold, we
have forsaken everything, and have come to follow after you; therefore
what shall we have?” 28 Yeshua said to them: “Truly I say to you, that
you, who have come to follow after me, in the new era, when the Son of
Man shall sit upon the throne of his glory, you also will sit upon
twelve seats, and will judge the twelve tribes of Yisrael. 29 And anyone
who has left houses, or brothers or sisters, or father or mother, or
wife or children, or fields, for the sake of my name, will receive one
hundredfold, and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first
will be last, and last will be first.”
Chapter 20
1 “For the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man, the master of
a house, who went out in the morning, to hire labourers for his
vineyard. 2 And he contracted the labours for a daily wage*, and sent
them into his vineyard. 3 And he went out during the third hour, and saw
others standing idle at the marketplace; 4 and he said to them: ‘You
also go into my vineyard, and I will give to you what is right;’ 5 and
they left. And again he went out during the sixth and during ninth
hours, and did the same. 6 And around the eleventh hour he went out and
found others who were standing and were idle; and he said to them: ‘Why
are you standing here all day and idle?’ 7 They said to him: ‘Because no
man has hired us.’ He said to them: ‘Go also into the vineyard and you
will receive what is right.’ 8 And when it became evening, the master of
the vineyard said to his steward: ‘Call the labourers, and give them
their wages; and begin with the last, and proceed to the first.’ 9 And
those of the eleventh hour came, each receiving a day’s wage. 10 And
when the first came, they were in hopes of receiving more; but each of
them also received a day’s wage. 11 And after they were paid, they
murmured against the master of the house, 12 and said: ‘These last ones
have laboured for only one hour, and you made them equal with us who
have bore the burden of the day and its heat.’ 13 But he answered, and
said to one of them: ‘My friend, I did not wrong you. Was it not for a
day’s wage that you agreed with me in the contract? 14 Take yours and
go, for I desire to give to these last ones, as to you. 15 Or is it not
lawful for me to do that which I desire with what belongs to me; or is
your eye evil, because I am good?’ 16 Thus the last will be first, and
the first will be last; for many are those who are called, but there are
only a few who are chosen.”
17 And Yeshua was going to go up to Yerushalayim, and he
took his twelve talmidim alone on [[the side of]] the road, and said to
them: 18 “Behold! We are going up to Yerushalayim; and the Son of Man
will be delivered up to the chief priests and to the scribes, and they
will condemn him to death. 19 And they will deliver him over to the
gentiles: and they will mock him, and will beat him, and will crucify
him; and the third day, he will rise.”
20 Then the mother of the sons of Zavddai came to him,
she and her sons; and she worshipped him, and was asking something from
him. 21 And he said to her: “What do you desire?” And she said to him:
“Say, that these my two sons will sit, the one on your right hand and
the other on your left, in your kingdom.” 22 And Yeshua answered and
said: “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink of the
cup, of which I am to drink? Or be baptised with the baptism that I am
baptised with? Or enter the place that I enter?*” They said to him: “We
are able.”
23 He said to them: “You will drink my cup, and will be
baptised with the baptism that I am baptised with, but that you should
sit at my right hand and at my left, is not mine to give, except to
those for whom it is prepared by my Father.” 24 And when the ten heard
this they became angry with those two brothers. 25 And Yeshua called
them, and said to them: “You know that the princes of the gentiles are
their masters, and their nobles exercise authority over them. 26 Do not
permit it to be this way among you. But whoever among you desires to be
great, let him be a minister to you; 27 and he who desires to be first
among you, let him be a servant to you; 28 just as the Son of Man did
not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for
the sake of many.”
29 And when Yeshua went out from Yericho, a large crowd
was following after him. 30 And behold! Two blind men were sitting on
the side of the road. And when they heard that Yeshua was passing, they
cried out, and were saying: “Have mercy on us, Mari ben David!*” 31 But
the crowds were rebuking them so that they would be quiet. But they
raised their voice even higher, and said: “Maran, have mercy on us, Ben
David.”
32 And Yeshua stopped, and called them, and said: “What
do you desire for me to do?” 33 They said to him: “Maran, that our eyes
may be opened.” 34 And he showed compassion for them, and touched their
eyes and immediately their eyes were opened, and they followed after
him.
Chapter 21
1 And when he approached Yerushalayim, and came to
Beit-Pageh, on the side of Har-Zeitim*, Yeshua sent two of his talmidim;
2 and said to them: “Go into this village that is before you, and
immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them
and bring them to me. 3 And if anyone says anything to you, tell him:
‘they are needed for our Master;’ and he will send them here
immediately.”
4 And all this happened so that it might be fulfilled
that which was spoken through the prophet, saying:
5 “Say to the daughter of Tzion: ‘Behold! Your king comes
to you, meek, and sitting on a donkey, and on a colt the foal of a
donkey.”*
6 And the talmidim left, and they did as Yeshua commanded
them. 7 And they brought the donkey and the colt. And they placed their
garments on the colt, and set Yeshua upon it. 8 And several large crowds
spread their clothing along the road while others were cutting branches
from the trees, and cast them on the road. 9 The crowds that went in
front of him, and that followed after him, cried out saying: “Hosanna to
Ben David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of YHWH! Hosanna in the
highest!”
10 And as he entered Yerushalayim, all within the city
were stirred up; and they said: “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds were
saying: “This is Yeshua, the prophet who is of the place of the Nesarim
of the Galil.”
12 And Yeshua entered into the Beit ha'Mikdash of Elohim,
and drove out all those who were buying and selling in Beit ha'Mikdash,
and he overturned the table of the moneychangers, and the chairs of
those who were selling doves. 13 And there was light coming forth from
his eyes and it frightened them, and he said to them: “It is written:
‘My house will be called a house of prayer’; but you have made it a cave
of thieves.”*
14 And the blind and the lame drew near to him in Beit
ha'Mikdash; and he healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and
Pharisees saw the miracles* that he did, and the children who were
crying out in Beit ha'Mikdash and saying: “Hosanna to Bar David”, they
were not pleased. 16 And they said to him: “Do you hear what they are
saying?” Yeshua said to them: “Yes. Have you never read that from out of
the mouth of children and infants you have acquired* praise?”
17 And he left them, and went outside of the city to
Beit-Ani, and lodged there.
18 And in the morning, when he returned to the city, he
hungered. 19 And he saw a certain fig tree on the side of the road, and
came to it but did not find anything on it except leaves. And he said to
it: “Let there never be fruit on you again.” And the fig tree withered
straight away. 20 And the talmidim saw this, and were amazed, and were
saying: “How quickly the fig tree withered!”
21 Yeshua replied and said to them: “Truly I say to you,
that if you have faith without doubt, you may not only do this miracle
concerning the fig tree, even if you shall say to this mountain: ‘be
lifted up, and fall into the sea,’ it will happen. 22 And everything
that you ask for in prayer, and believe, you will receive.”
23 And when Yeshua came to Beit ha'Mikdash, the chief
priests and the elders of the people came to him while he was teaching,
and said to him: “By what authority do you do these things? And who gave
this authority to you?” 24 Yeshua answered and said to them: “I will
also ask you a question, and if you will answer me, I also will tell you
by what authority I do these things. 25 The baptism of Yochanan, from
where was it? Is it from heaven, or from men?” And they were reasoning
among themselves, and were saying: “If we should say [[it is]] from
heaven, he will say to us, ‘Why did you not believe in him?’ 26 And if
we should say [[it is]] from men; we are afraid of the crowd, for they
all regard Yochanan as a prophet.”
27 And they answered, and said to him: “We do not know.”
Yeshua said to them: “Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these
things. 28 But what do you perceive of this? A certain man had two sons;
and he drew near to the first one and said to him: ‘My son, go today and
labour in the vineyard.’ 29 But he answered and said, ‘I do not wish
to.’ But later on he regretted it and went. 30 And he drew near to the
other, and said the same thing to him. And he answered and said: ‘I
will, my master’, but did not go. 31 Which of these two did the will of
his father?” They said to him: “The first.” Yeshua said to them: “Truly
I say to you that tax collectors and prostitutes will precede you into
the Kingdom of Elohim. 32 For Yochanan came to you in the way of
righteousness, and you did not believe him; but the tax collectors and
prostitutes believed him; but you, after you saw this, even then you did
not repent and believe in him.
33 “Hear another parable. There was a certain man, the
master of a house, who planted a vineyard, making a fence around it, and
he dug a winepress in it, and constructed a tower in it, and leased it
to labourers, and went on a journey. 34 And when the time for the
harvest arrived, he sent his servants out to the labourers that they
might remit to him of the fruit of his vineyard. 35 And the labourers
took his servants, and some they beat, and some they stoned and some
they murdered. 36 And again he sent other servants, more than the first;
and they did the same to them. 37 Finally he sent to them his son
saying: ‘Perhaps they will have respect for my son.’*
38 But the labourers, when they saw the son, said among
themselves: ‘This is the heir; come and let us take him and murder him,
to obtain his inheritance.’ 39 And after grabbing hold of him, took him
outside the vineyard, and murdered him. 40 Therefore, when the master of
the vineyard comes, what should he do to those labourers?” 41 They said
to him: “He should absolutely destroy them; and will lease the vineyard
to other labourers, who will give to him the fruit in its season.”
42 Yeshua said to them: “Have you never read in the
Scripture: ‘The stone that was rejected by the builders became the head
of the corner; this is from the presence of YHWH; and it is marvellous
in our eyes’?*
43 “Therefore I say to you, that the Kingdom of Elohim
shall be taken from you, and shall be given to a people who bear fruit.
44 And whoever falls upon this stone, will be broken; and anyone it
falls upon it will crush.”
45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees heard his
parables, they understood that he spoke against them. 46 And they wanted
to arrest him, but they were afraid of the crowd, because they regarded
him as a prophet.
Chapter 22
1 And Yeshua answered again in parables, and said: 2 “The
kingdom of heaven is like to a king who made a feast for his son. 3 And
he sent his servants so as to call those that had been invited to a
wedding feast, but they had no desire to come. 4 And again he sent other
servants, and said: ‘Say to those who are invited: ‘Behold! My supper is
prepared, my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and every thing is
prepared; come to the wedding feast.’ 5 But they showed disrespect, and
went away, one to his field, and another to his business; 6 and the rest
grabbed hold of his servants, and mocked them, and murdered them. 7 And
when the king heard this, he was angry, and he sent his armies, and
destroyed those murderers, and he burned their city.
8 “Then said he to his servants: ‘The wedding feast is
prepared, but those that were invited are not worthy. 9 Go therefore to
the main streets and anyone that you may find, call to the wedding
feast.’ 10 And those servants went out into the streets, and gathered
anyone that they found, both bad and good; and the banquet house filled
with guests. 11 And the king went in to see the guests, and he saw a man
there who was not wearing attire for a wedding. 12 And he said to him:
‘My friend, how did enter in here without wedding attire?’ But he said
nothing. 13 Then the king said to the servants: ‘Bind his hands and his
feet, and cast him into the outer darkness.’ There will be weeping and
gnashing of teeth. 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”
15 Then the Pharisees left and took counsel, as to how
they might trap him with a question. 16 And they sent their talmidim to
him, with the Herodians, and were saying to him: “Rabbi, we know that
you are true, and you correctly teach the Way of Elohim, without favour
to any man, for you do not differentiate between men. 17 Tell us,
therefore, tell us your interpretation: is it lawful to pay head money
to Caesar or not?” 18 But Yeshua knew their evil [[motives]], and said:
“Why do you plan to trap me, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin* of the
head tax.” And they brought to him a coin. 20 And Yeshua said to them:
“Whose image and inscription is this?” 21 And they said: “Caesar”. He
said to them: “Therefore, give that which is of Caesar to Caesar, and
that which is of Elohim to Elohim.” 22 And when they heard this they
were amazed and they left him, and went away.
23 On the same day the Sadducees approached and said to
him: “There is no resurrection of the dead.” And they asked him, 24
saying to him: “Rabbi, Mosha instructed us, that if a man should die
having no sons, his brother should take his wife and raise up seed for
his brother. 25 Now there were with us seven brothers. The first took a
wife, and died and because he had no sons, he left his wife to his
brother. 26 In the same manner also the second, the third, and up to the
seventh. 27 And after all of them the woman died. 28 In the
resurrection, therefore, which of those seven will she be a wife? For
they all had married her?”
29 Yeshua answered, and said to them: “You err due to not
knowing the Scriptures, or the power of Elohim. 30 For in the
resurrection of the dead, women are not married, nor are women given to
husbands; rather they are as the angels of Elohim in heaven. 31 But as
for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read that which was
spoken to you by Elohim, who said: 32 ‘I am the Elohim of Avraham, the
Elohim of Yitzchak, and the Elohim of Ya’aqub’? Now he is not the Elohim
of the dead, but of the living.”
33 And when the crowds heard this they were amazed,
because of his teaching. 34 And when the Pharisees heard that he had
silenced the Sadducees, they assembled together, 35 and asked one of
them, who knew the Torah, to test him: 36 “Rabbi, which mitzvah is the
greatest in the Torah?” 37 Yeshua said to him: “You shall love the YHWH
your Elohim, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all
your might, and with all your mind. 38 This is the greatest and first
mitzvah. 39 And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as
yourself. 40 On these two mitzvoth hang the Torah and the Prophets.”
41 And while the Pharisees were assembled, Yeshua
questioned them, 42 and said: “What do you say about the Messiah? Whose
son is he?” They said to him: “The son of David. 43 And he said to them:
“How then did David, in the Spirit, call him YHWH? for he said: 44 ‘YHWH
said to my Lord, Sit yourself at my right hand until I place your
enemies under your feet.’*
45 Therefore, if David calls him YHWH, how is he his
son?” 46 And no one was able to give him an answer and from that day, no
one dared to question him.
Chapter 23
1 Then Yeshua conversed with the multitude and with his
talmidim, 2 and said to them: “The Scribes and Pharisees sit upon the
seat of Mosha. 3 Therefore, everything they instruct you to observe, you
shall observe and do. But you should not imitate their deeds; for they
talk, and do not act*. 4 They bind heavy burdens and place them on the
shoulders of the sons of men; but do not have the desire to touch them
with their fingers. 5 And all their deeds they do, so that they might be
seen by the sons of men; for they make their tefillin wide, and extend
the length of their techelet on their robes. 6 And they love the highest
couches at suppers and the primary seats at the assembly, 7 and a
greeting in the streets, and to be addressed by men as “my great one”.
8 But you should not be called “my great one”; for one is
your Great One, and you are all brothers. 9 And you should not call
yourselves ‘father’ on earth as do these, for one is your Father, who is
in heaven. 10 And you should not be called ‘leaders’ as do these, for
one is your Leader, the Mashiach. Do not consider anyone such as these
as your father or your leader. 11 But he who is greatest among you, let
him be to you as a minister. 12 For whoever exalts himself, will be
humbled, and whoever humbles himself, will be exalted.
13 “Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For
you completely consume the houses of widows, under the cover of
lengthening your prayers. Due to this you shall receive greater
judgment.
14 “Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for
you shut up the Kingdom of heaven closed before the sons of men; for you
do not enter yourselves, and those that would enter you do not allow to
enter.
15 “Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for
you cross sea and land so that you might make a single proselyte, and
when he has become such, you make him into a son of Gehinnom twice more
than yourselves.
16 “Woe to you, you blind guides, for you say: ‘Whoever
swears by Beit ha'Mikdash, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold
that is in Beit ha'Mikdash, he is guilty.’ 17 All of you are blind
fools! Which is greater, the gold, or Beit ha'Mikdash that sanctifies
the gold? 18 And [[you say:]] ‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is
nothing, but whoever swears by the offering upon it, he is guilty.’ 19
All of you are blind fools! Which is greater, the offering, or the altar
that sanctifies the offering? 20 Therefore, whoever swears by the altar,
swears by it, and by all the things that are upon it. 21 And whoever
swears by Beit ha'Mikdash, swears by it, and by He who dwells in it. 22
Whoever swears by heaven, swears by throne of Elohim, and by Him that
sits upon it.
23 “Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for
you tithe mint, and dill, and cummin, and omit the more important
matters of Torah, [[which are]] judgment, and mercy, and fidelity. For
these things you should have done, and you should not have forgotten. 24
Blind guides! You strain the gnats, and swallow the camels.
25 “Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for
you cleanse the outside of the cup and the platter, while within they
are full of extortion and sin. 26 Blind Pharisees, you cleanse first the
inside of the cup and the platter so that their outside may also be
clean.
27 “Woe to you hypocritical scribes and Pharisees, you
are white sepulchres which are filled with the bones of dead men. 28 So
you also, on the outside, appear to the sons of men as tzadikim; but on
the inside you are filled with hypocrisy and with the bones of the
dead*.
29 “Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for
you build the tombs of the prophets and you adorn the sepulchres of the
tzadikim; 30 and you say: ‘If we had been in the days of our fathers, we
would not have been participants in the blood of the prophets.’
31 “Therefore you witness against yourselves, that you
are the sons of those that murdered the prophets. 32 And you also fill
up the measure of your fathers.*
33 “Serpents, offspring of vipers! How will you flee from
the judgment of Gehinnom? 34 Therefore, behold! I will send to you
prophets, and wise men, and scribes; some of them you will murder and
crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your assemblies, and will
chase them from city to city, 35 so that upon you will come all the
blood of the righteous, which has been shed on the earth, from the blood
of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah ben Yehoiada, whom you
murdered between Beit ha'Mikdash and the altar. 36 Truly I say to you,
that all these things will come upon this generation.
37 “O Yerushalayim, Yerushalayim, murderess of the
prophets, and stoner of those that are sent to you! How often I have
desired to gather your children like a hen gathers her chicks under her
wings, and you did not desire it. 38 Behold, your house is left to you
deserted! 39 For I say to you, that you will not see me from this time
forth, until you say: ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of YHWH.’”
Chapter 24
1 And Yeshua went out of Beit ha'Mikdash to leave and his
talmidim drew near to him, showing him the structure of Beit ha'Mikdash.
2 And he said to them: “Behold! Do you not see all these things? Truly I
say to you, there will not be left here a stone upon a stone, that will
not be torn down.”
3 And while Yeshua was sitting on Har-Zeitim, his
talmidim drew near, and were saying among themselves and to him: “Tell
us when these things will be; and what is the sign of your coming, and
of the end of this era?” 4 And Yeshua answered them: “Beware! Let no
man deceive you. 5 For many will come in my name, and will say: ‘I am
the Messiah;’ and they will deceive many. 6 And you will certainly hear
of civil unrest and rumours of wars. See to it that you are not
disturbed, for it is necessary that all these things occur; but the end
is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against
kingdom; and there will be famines, and plagues, and earthquakes in
different places. 8 But all these are only the beginning of sorrows. 9
And they will deliver you up to trials, and they will murder you, and
all the gentiles will hate you because of my name. 10 Then many will
stumble and will hate one another, and will betray one another.
11 “And many false prophets will arise deceiving many. 12
And because of the increase of wickedness, the love of many will grow
cold. 13 Whoever has patience until the end will have life. 14 And this
good news of the Kingdom will be preached in all the earth, as a
testimony to all the gentiles, and then the end will come. 15 And when
you see the sign of uncleanness and desolation, that which was spoken of
by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place, (he that reads let
him understand) 16 and then let those who are in Yehuda flee to the
mountain: 17 and he who is on the rooftop, let him not come down to take
that which is in his house: 18 and he who is in the field, let him not
turn back in order to take his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are
pregnant, and to those that are nursing, in those days. 20 And pray that
your flight will not be in winter or on Shabbat. 21 For there will then
be great suffering, such as has not been from the beginning of the
world, until the present, nor will ever be. 22 And if those days were
not shortened, then no flesh would live. But because of the chosen,
those days will be shortened.
23 “Then, if any one shall say to you: ‘Behold! The
Messiah is here, or is there’; do not believe them. 24 For there will
arise false messiahs, and lying prophets and they will display great
signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even the chosen. 25
Behold! I have told you in advance. 26 If, therefore, they say to you:
‘Behold! He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Behold! He is in
the inner chamber,’ do not believe them.
27 “As the light* comes out of the east, and is seen in
the west, also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 28 And wherever the
carcass may be, there the eagles will gather. 29 And immediately after
the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will
not shine its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers
of heaven will be shaken. 30 And then there will be seen the sign of the
Son of Man in heaven; and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn
when they see the Son of Man who comes on the clouds of heaven, with
power and great glory. 31 And he will send his angels with a large
trumpet and they will gather his chosen ones from the four winds, and
from one end of heaven to the other.
32 “Now learn a parable from the fig tree. As soon as its
branches become tender and it starts springing forth leaves, you know
that summer is here. 33 So also, when you have seen all these things,
know that it has arrived at the door. 34 Truly I say to you, that this
tribe will not pass away, until all these things take place. 35 Heaven
and earth may pass away; but my word shall not pass away.
36 “But concerning that day and that hour, no man knows,
not even the angels of heaven, but the Father only. 37 And as the days
of Noach, so will the coming of the Son of Man be. 38 For as, before the
flood, they were eating and drinking, taking women and giving them in
marriage to men, up to the day that Noach entered the ark, 39 and they
did not know, until the flood came and took all of them away; so will
the coming of the Son of Man be. 40 Then two men will be in the field;
one will be taken, and the other will be left. 41 And two women will be
grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and the other left.
42 “Be observant, therefore, since you do not know at
what hour your Lord comes. 43 And know this: that if the master of the
house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have been
watched, and would not have permitted his house to be plundered. 44
Therefore, you also be prepared; because the Son of Man will come during
an hour that you do not expect.
45 “Who then is that faithful and wise servant, whom his
master has appointed over his household, to provide to them food in due
time? 46 Blessed is that servant, whom, when his master comes, he will
find so doing. 47 Truly I say to you, that he will appoint him over all
that he possesses. 48 But if a servant, being full of wickedness, says
in his heart: ‘My master will be delayed in coming;’ 49 and begins to
beat his fellow servants, and eats and drinks with drunkards; 50 the
master of that servant will come in a day that he does not expect, and
during an hour he does not know, 51 and will cut him in two, and will
give to him his portion among the hypocrites; there will be weeping and
gnashing of teeth.
Chapter 25
1 Then let the Kingdom of heaven be likened to ten
virgins, those who took their lamps and went out for the gathering of
the bridegroom and bride. 2 Now five of them were wise, and five were
foolish. 3 And the foolish took their lamps, but did not take with them
any oil. 4 But those who were wise took oil in vessels, with their
lamps. 5 Now when the bridegroom delayed, they all became weary and fell
asleep. 6 And at midnight there was an outcry: ‘Behold! The bridegroom
comes! Go out for his gathering!’ 7 Then all those virgins arose, and
prepared their lamps. 8 And those among the foolish were saying to the
wise: ‘Give us some of your oil; for, look, our lamps have gone out.’ 9
And those among the wise answered and said: ‘No. There is not enough for
us and for you; go to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And
while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready
went with him into the banquet hall, and the door was locked. 11 Now
later on those other virgins came, and said: ‘Mari, mari, open the door
for us.’ 12 And then he answered, and said to them: ‘Truly I say to you,
I do not know you.’
13 Be observant, therefore, for you do not know the day
or the hour.
14 For, it is like a man that took a journey; he called
his servants and delivered to them his possessions; 15 there was one to
whom he gave five talents; to another, two; and to another, one; to
each, according to his ability, and he immediately went on his journey.
16 Now he who received five talents, went and traded with them, and
gained five more. 17 And likewise, he who received two talents traded
and gained two more. 18 But he who received one, went and dug in the
ground, and hid the money of his master.
19 Now after a long period time, the master of those
servants came, and received from them an account. 20 And he who had
received the five talents, brought five others, and said: “Mari, you
gave five talents to me; see how I have gained by trading five more to
them.’ 21 His master said to him: ‘Well done good and faithful servant!
You have been faithful over a little; I will appoint you over much.
Enter into the joy of your master.’ 22 And he who has been given two
talents came, and said: ‘Mari, you gave two talents to me; see how I
have gained two more to them by trading.’ 23 His master said to him:
‘Well done good and faithful servant! You have been faithful over a
little; I will appoint you over much. Enter into the joy of your
master.’
24 And he who received one talent came to him and said:
‘Mari, you are known to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown,
and gathering from where you have not scattered; 25 so I was afraid, and
went and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.’ 26
His master answered, and said to him: ‘You evil and lazy servant! It is
known that I reap where I have not sown, and I gather from where I have
not scattered! 27 It would have been better for you to have placed my
money in the exchange; and I might have come and demanded my own with
its interest. 28 Therefore, take the talent from him and give it to him
who has ten talents. 29 For, to him who has, it will be given to him,
and it will increase for him; but he who does not have, even that which
he does have will be taken away from him. 30 And throw the unsuccessful
servant into the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of
teeth.’
31 And when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all
his holy angels with him, then will he sit upon the throne of his glory.
32 And he will gather before him all the nations; and he will separate
them one from another, as a shepherd who separates the sheep from the
goats. 33 And he will set the sheep at his right hand, and the goats at
his left. 34 Then the King will say to those who are at his right:
‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; inherit the Kingdom that has
been prepared for you from the foundations of the world. 35 For I was
hungry, and you gave me food to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me
drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in; 36 I was naked, and you
clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you
came to me.’
37 Then the tzadikim will say to him: ‘Maran, when did we
see you hungry, and feed you? or thirsty, and gave you drink? 38 And
when did we see you a stranger, and took you in? or naked, and clothe
you? 39 And when did we see you sick, or in prison, and came to you?’ 40
And the King will answer, and say to them: ‘Truly I say to you, that
inasmuch as you have done it to one of these my least brothers, you did
it to me.’
41 “Then he will also say to those that are at his left:
‘Go away from me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire, which is
prepared for the adversary and his angels; 42 for I was hungry, and you
did not give me food to eat; and I was thirsty, and you did not give me
drink; 43 and I was a stranger, and you did not take me in; and I was
naked, and you did not clothe me; and I was sick and in prison, and you
did not visit me. 44 Then they will also answer and say: ‘Maran, when
did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or
in prison, and did not minister to you?' 45 Then he will answer and say
to them: ‘Truly I say to you, that inasmuch as you did not do to one of
these little ones, also you did not do to me. 46 And these will leave
into everlasting torment, and the tzadikim into everlasting life.’”
Chapter 26
1 And it came to pass, that when Yeshua had finished all
these sayings, he said to his talmidim: 2 “You know that after two days
is Pesach; and the Son of Man will be betrayed to be crucified.”
3 Then the chief priests and the scribes and the elders
of the people gathered together at the court of the high priest, who was
called Qeiafa. 4 And they took counsel concerning Yeshua, so that they
might take arrest him by deceit and murder him. 5 And they were saying:
“Not during the festival, in case disorder should take place among the
people.”
6 And when Yeshua was in Beit-Anya, in the house of
Shimon the potter, 7 a woman approached him having an alabaster vase of
ointment that was a very valuable perfume, and she poured it on the head
of Yeshua as he was reclining. 8 And when his talmidim saw this they
were not pleased, and said: “Why such waste? 9 For this could have been
sold for a high price, and then could have been given to the poor.” 10
But Yeshua knew this, and said to them: “Why are you upsetting her? The
woman has done a good deed for me. 11 For you will always have the poor
with you; but you will not always have me. 12 But this one act, pouring
the perfume on my body, she has done so as if it were for my burial. 13
Truly I say to you, that wherever this my good news is preached, in all
the earth, also this thing that she did will be told as a memorial to
her.”
14 Then one of the twelve, named Yudah Skariota, went to
the chief priests, 15 and said to them: “What are you willing to give
me, if I will deliver him to you?” And they promised him thirty pieces
of silver. 16 And from then on, he was seeking a chance to betray him.
17 And on the first day of the feast of unleavened
bread*, the talmidim drew near to Yeshua, and said to him: “Where do you
want us to prepare a place for you to have the seder?”* 18 And he said
to them: “Go to the city, to a certain man, and say to him: ‘Our Rabbi
says: ‘My time is arriving; I will keep Pesach with you my talmidim.’’”
19 And his talmidim did as Yeshua directed them, and prepared for
Pesach.
20 And when it was evening, he was reclining among his
twelve talmidim. 21 And while they were eating, he said: “Truly I say to
you, that one of you will betray me.” 22 And it made them very sad. And
each of them began to say to him: “Mari, is it I?”* 23 And he answered
and said: “He who dips his hand with me in the dish, that one will
betray me. 24 And the Son of Man will go, as it is written concerning
him. Woe to that man, by whose hand the Son of Man is betrayed. It
would have been better for that man, if he had not been born.” 25 Yudah
the betrayer answered and said: “Rabbi, is it I?” Yeshua said to him:
“You have said it.”
26 And while they were eating Yeshua took bread and
blessed, and broke it; and gave to his talmidim, and said: “Take, eat;
this is my body.” 27 And he took the cup, and offered thanks and gave to
them, saying: “Take, drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of
the new covenant, which is shed for the sake of many for the forgiveness
of sins. 29 But I say to you, that I will not drink from this fruit of
the vine, until the day in which I drink it with you anew in the Kingdom
of Elohim.”
30 And they sang Hallel*, and went out to Har-Zeitim. 31
Then Yeshua said to them: “All of you will be offended by me in this
night; for it is written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of
his flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I have risen, I will go
before you into Galil.” 33 Keipha answered, and said to him: “Even if
everyone is offended by you, I will never be offended by you.”
34 Yeshua said to him: “Truly I say to you, that in this
night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.” 35 Keipha
said to him: “Even if I had to die with you, I would not deny you,” and
all the talmidim also said this.
36 Then Yeshua came with them to a place called
Gethsemane, and he said to his talmidim: “Sit here, while I go pray.” 37
And he took Keipha and the two sons of Zavddai, and began to be
sorrowful and wearied. 38 And he said to them: “There is sadness in my
soul, even to death. Wait with me here, and watch with me.” 39 And he
went a little ways, and fell upon his face, and prayed, and said: “My
Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass over me. However, not as I
will, but as you will.” 40 And he came to his talmidim, and found them
while they were sleeping, and he said to Keipha: “So! were you not able
to watch with me one hour? 41 Pay attention and pray, in case you fall
into temptation. The spirit is ready, but the body is frail.”
42 Again he went away the second time, and prayed, and
said: “My Father, if it cannot be that this cup pass, except I drink it,
your will be done.” 43 And he came again and found them while they were
sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
44 And he left them, and went away again and prayed for a
third time, and he said the same words. 46 Then he came to his talmidim,
and said to them: “Sleep for now, and take rest.” And he approached
them again a little while later and said to them: “Behold! The hour has
arrived, and the Son of Man will be delivered into the hands of sinners.
46 Rise up! Let us go. Behold! He who has betrayed me has arrived.”
47 And while he was speaking, behold, Yudah the betrayer,
one of the twelve, arrived; and a large crowd was with him, with swords
and clubs, before the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 And
Yudah the betrayer had given them a sign, saying: “It is he whom I kiss;
seize him.” 49 And immediately he went to Yeshua, and said: “Shalom,
Rabbi;” and kissed him. 50 And Yeshua said to him: “Is it for this
reason you have come, my friend?” Then drawing near, they laid their
hands on Yeshua, and seized him.
51 And behold, one of those who was with Yeshua stretched
out his hand, and drew a sword, and attacked a servant of the high
priest, and cut off his ear. 52 Then Yeshua said to him: “Return the
sword to its place; for all those who take swords, shall die by swords.
53 Do you think that I am not able to ask my Father, and he raise up for
me more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How then could the Scriptures
be fulfilled, that this is how it must be?”
55 At that time Yeshua said to the crowd: “Have you come
out, as against a bandit, with swords and clubs, to arrest me? Everyday
I was sitting with you and teaching in Beit ha'Mikdash, and you did not
arrest me.” 56 But this has happened so that the writings of the
Prophets might be fulfilled. Then all of the talmidim left him and fled.
57 And those who seized Yeshua led him to Qeiafa the high
priest, where the scribes and elders were gathering together. 58 And
Shimon Keipha followed after him from a distance up to the court of the
high priest, and entered, and sat inside with the guards, that he might
see the matter.
59 And the chief priests and the elders and the entire
assembly were seeking after witnesses against Yeshua, so that they might
murder him; 60 but they did not find any. And many false witnesses came;
and finally, two came forward, 61 and said: “This man said: ‘I am able
to tear down Beit ha'Mikdash of Elohim, and in three days rebuild it.’”
62 And the high priest arose up and said to him: “Do you not have
anything to answer to this matter these men have given witness to?”
63 But Yeshua was silent. And the high priest answered,
and said to him: “I adjure you by the living Elohim, that you tell us if
you are the anointed ben Elohim.” 64 Yeshua said to him: “You have said
it. And I say to you, that from now on you will see the Son of Man
sitting at the right hand of power, and coming upon the clouds of
heaven.” 65 Then the high priest tore his clothes, and said: “Behold, he
has blasphemed! Why therefore do we need witnesses? Behold! You have now
heard his blasphemy. 66 What is it that you want to do?” They answered
and said: “He deserves death.” 67 Then they began spitting in his face
and striking at his head, while others were beating him, 68 and said to
him: “Prophesy to us, Messiah, who is it that struck you?”
69 And Keipha was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a
certain maid came up to him, and said to him: “You also were with Yeshua
the Nasarean.” 70 But he denied it before all of them, and said: “I do
not know what you are saying.” 71 And he went out to the portico, and
another maid saw him, and said to the people: “There! That man was also
with Yeshua the Nasarean.” 72 And again he denied it, with oaths: “I do
not know the man.” 73 And after a little while, those who were standing
there came up and said to Keipha: “Indeed, you were also with them; your
dialect makes you known.” 74 Then he began to denit and to curse and
say: “I do not know the man.” 75 And Keipha remembered the word of
Yeshua, who said to him: “Before the cock crows, you will deny me three
times.” And after he went outside, he condemned himself, and wept
bitterly.
Chapter 27
1 And when it was morning, all the chief priests and the
elders of the people took council against Yeshua, so that they might put
him to death. 2 And they bound him, and took him and delivered him up to
the governor Pilatos.
3 Then Yudah the betrayer, when he saw that Yeshua was
convicted, repented. And he went and returned those thirty pieces of
silver to the chief priests and elders; 4 and said: “I have sinned, due
to the fact that I have betrayed innocent blood.” And they said: “What
is it to us? See to your own issues.” 5 And he threw the silver into
Beit ha'Mikdash, and leaving, he went and hanged himself. 6 And the
chief priests picked up the silver, and said: “It is not lawful to put
it in the treasury, because it is the price of blood.” 7 And they took
counsel, and bought the potter's field with it, to serve as a burial
ground for strangers. 8 Therefore that field is called the Field of
Blood to this day.
9 Then it was fulfilled that which was spoken by the
prophet [[Zechariah]], saying: “I took the thirty pieces of silver, the
price of the precious one, which they of the B’nai Yisrael had agreed
upon;
10 and I gave them for the field of the potter, as YHWH
directed me.”*
11 Now Yeshua stood before the governor. And the governor
said to him: “Are you the king of the Judeans?” And Yeshua said to him:
“You have said it.” 12 And when the chief priests and elders were
accusing him, he would not return a reply. 13 Then Pilatos said to him:
“Do you not hear how much they testify against you?” 14 But he did not
answer him, not even a single word, and therefore the governor* was
greatly amazed.
15 And at each festival the governor was accustomed to
set one prisoner free to the people, whoever they desired. 16 And they
had a well-known prisoner who had been imprisoned, called Bar Abba. 17
And when they were gathered together, Pilatos said to them: “Whom do you
desire that I release to you, Bar Abba, or Yeshua who is called the
Messiah?” 18 For Pilatos knew that it was because of hate that they had
handed over Yeshua*. 19 And while the governor was sitting on the
judgment seat, his wife sent to him, and said: “Have nothing to do with
that just man; for I have suffered very much today in a dream because of
him.” 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds that
they ask for Bar Abba, and to destroy Yeshua. 21 And the governor
answered, and said to them: “Whom do you desire to be freed to you?”
And they said: “Bar Abba!” 22 Pilatos
said to them: “And Yeshua, who is called the Messiah, what should I do
to him?” They all said: “Let him be crucified.” 23 The governor said to
them: “Indeed, what evil has he committed?” And they cried out all the
more, and said: “Let him be crucified.” 24 And Pilatos, when he saw that
nothing was helpful, but rather that uproar was produced, he took water,
and washed his hands before the crowds, and said: “I am innocent of the
blood of this righteous man; do as you will.” 25 And all the people
answered, and said: “His blood be upon us, and upon our children!” 26
Then he released Bar Abba to them; and scourged Yeshua with whips and
gave him over to be crucified.
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Yeshua into the
Praetorium, and assembled the entire brigade against him. 28 And they
stripped him, and clothed him with a purple robe*. 29 And they wove a
crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand,
and they bowed down upon their knees before him, and they were mocking
him, saying: “Hail, King of the Judeans.” 30 And they spit in his face,
and took the reed, and struck him on his head. 31 And when they had
mocked him, they removed the robe, and put on him his own garments, and
led him away to be crucified.
32 And as they went out, they found a man from Qurinya*
whose name was Shimon; and they compelled him to carry his cross. 33 And
they came to a place which is called Golgotha. 34 And they gave him to
strong vinegar drink mixed with gall. And he tasted it but did not
desire to drink it. 35 And when they had crucified him, they divided his
clothes by casting lots. 36 And sitting down, they were watching him
there. 37 And they placed over his head the reason for his death in
writing:

38 And there were crucified with him two bandits, one on
his right, and one on his left. 39 And those who were passing by were
blaspheming against him, and were nodding their heads 40 and saying:
“You who would tear down Beit ha'Mikdash, and rebuild it in three days,
deliver yourself if you are the ben Elohim, and come down from the
cross.” 41 Likewise the chief priests were mocking, along with the
scribes and elders and Pharisees, 42 and they were saying: “He saved
others, but his very life he is not able to save. If he is the King of
Yisrael, let him come down now from the cross, so that we may see it and
believe in him. 43 He trusted in Elohim; let him save him now, if he is
pleased with him, for he said: ‘I am ben Elohim’”
44 Likewise the bandits that were also crucified with
him, criticised him. 45 And from the sixth hour there was darkness over
all the land, until the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour, Yeshua
cried out with a loud voice and said: “Eli, Eli; for this purpose you
have spared me.” 47 And some of those men that were standing there, when
they heard this, said: “He calls for Eliyahu.” 48 And immediately one of
them ran and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a
reed, and offered it to him. 49 But the rest were saying: “Let him be;
let us see if Eliyahu will come to save him.”
50 And again Yeshua cried out with a loud voice, and gave
up his spirit. 51 And immediately, the lintel of Beit ha'Mikdash fell
and broke into pieces; and the earth was shaken; and the rocks split. 52
And the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who were
sleeping arose, 53 and went out; and after his resurrection, they
entered into the Holy City, and many saw them. 54 And the centurion, and
those that were with him who were watching Yeshua, when they saw the
earthquake and all that had occurred, became afraid, and said: “Truly,
this was Ben Elohim.”
55 And there were also many women there, who were
observing from a distance; the same who had followed Yeshua from Galil,
and had ministered to him. 56 One of them was Miriam of Magdala, also
Miriam the mother of Ya’aqub and Yoseh, and the mother of the sons of
Zavddai.
57 And when it became evening, a rich man came from
Ramatayim, whose name was a Yoseph, who was also a talmid of Yeshua. 58
This man drew near to Pilatos, and requested the body of Yeshua. And
Pilatos instructed that the body be given to him. 59 And Yoseph took the
body, and wrapped it in a shroud of fine linen; 60 and he laid it in his
new sepulchre that had been hewn from rock. And they rolling a large
boulder, they placed it against the entrance of the sepulchre, and
departed: 6l And Miriam of Magdala and the other Miriam were there, who
sat on the other side of the sepulchre.
62 And on the next day that was after sunset*, the chief
priests and Pharisees gathered together with Pilatos, 63 and said to
him: “Our lord, we remember that this deceiver said, when he was alive,
‘After three days, I will arise.’ 64 Therefore, instruct that they guard
the sepulchre until the third day; in case his talmidim come and steal
him during the night, and say to the people that he has risen from the
dead; and the last deception should become worse than the first.’” 65
Pilatos said to them: “You have guards! Go and guard it as you see fit.”
66 And they went and appointed guards by the sepulchre, and set a seal
on the stone and placed the guards on watch.
Chapter 28
1 And in
the evening of Shabbat as it was dusk, as the first day of the week
began to dawn, Miriam of Magdala and the other Miriam came so that they
could see the sepulchre. 2 And behold! There was a great earthquake, for
an angel of YHWH descended from heaven, and came and rolled away the
boulder from the entrance, and he was sitting upon it. 3 And his
appearance was like the lightning, and his clothing was white like snow;
4 and from being afraid of him the guards were in shock, and became like
the dead. 5 But the angel answered, and said to the women: “Do not have
fear, for I know that you seek Yeshua who was crucified. 6 He is not
here; for he has risen, as he said. Come see the place where Maran was
laid. 7 Go now, quickly! Tell his talmidim, that he has risen from the
dead; and behold! He will be before you to Galil; there you will see
him. Behold, I have told you.”
8 And
they quickly left from the sepulchre with fear and with great joy, and
they were running so that they might tell his talmidim. 9 And behold!
Yeshua met them, and said to them: “Shalom Aleichem! And they drew near
to him and grabbed hold of his feet, and worshipped him. 10 Then Yeshua
said to them: “Do not be afraid; but go, tell my brothers, to go to
Galil, and there they will see me.”
11 And
when they left, some of the guards came to the city, and told the chief
priests everything that had occurred. 12 And they assembled with the
elders, and they took council; and they gave to the guards no small
amount of money, 13 and they said to them: “Say: ‘His talmidim came and
stole him during the night, while we were sleeping.’ 14 And if the
governor should hear this, we will pacify him, and keep you from being
troubled.” 15 And after they took the money, they did as they were
instructed. And this word is spoken of among the Judeans to this day.
16 Now
the eleven talmidim went to Galil, to the mountain where Yeshua had
instructed them to be. 17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him,
but some were sceptical. 18 And Yeshua drew near to them, and spoke with
them, and said to them: “All authority has been given to me, in heaven
and on earth. And as my Father sent me, I send you. 19 Go, therefore,
and make talmidim all the gentiles; and baptise them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 20 And teach them to
observe all that I have commanded you. And, behold! I am with you all
the days until the end of the world.” Amen.
